wheel bearing replacement

All off the wheel bearings are toast on my '80.  I have the how-to articles that Mat Parkhouse did in the BMWON regarding setting up the load and such.  Does this info transfer over to the R65?  The manuals that I have don't show the R65 bearing set-up.  Thanks.  jep

The same theory should apply to all tapered roller bearings.

Justin, I know that it will.  The set up is different on the R65's with those nylon things on he end of the spacer.  Is there a way to set up bearing on the axel with it off the wheel?  jep

I guess it would be possible to fabricate a fixture to hold them in that would simulate the forks but don't really know for sure.  You may get lucky and they'll drop right in.  I personally have never changed any BMW wheel bearing as over 30 years I've never had one go bad (knock-knock) but I have cleaned and re-packed more than I can remember...

My experience is with the R65 only. Dun no nuttin' bout nuttin else.

Someone somewhere made a statement that has stuck with me; it went kinda, "There's this whole BMW angst about setting the bearing preload." Thought it was funny then and now, too.

RacoonHead Snowbummer http://bmwmotorcycletech.info/ has some extensive and quite wordy thoughts on the BMW's rear wheel bearing preload setup. Plus, I recall a link to an other technique that is far less involved. And then there's my own technique - similar in ways to the BMW and the tapered bearing preload set on my Cabriolet rear axles.

I do know that I will in no way never ever use a carwash high pressure water stream to wash my scooter. That's how the PO cratered the rear bearings.

Research the Snowbum articles. You may glean some knowledge or discover a new cure for insomnia.
