BMW Hard Luggage I got on Ebay
« on: September 13, 2008, 09:11:10 PM »
Bought these with brackets on Ebay. Will they fit my 1983 R65? Hard to find info on this.

Thx!

Josh

I doubt it.  But if you can modify the brackets to fit your bike (not the other way around) then I bet you will like them a lot better than the factory luggage for your bike.

What are those from?

These look like the ones on my '04 R1150RT!  An OILHEAD  :o!!!   Oh, my!

Seriously, if they are, you would have quite an engineering task on your hands to design brackets to fit them.  It would be worth a look at an R1100 or 1150 with bags, to see how they are accomodated on the
bike.

Good luck.

Not sure what they are from. It was a wine driven e-bay purchase.  ;Dn

They are in nice shape and very roomy.

I have always dreamed of an airhead and now have one. Just purchased with 15K miles and super nice condition. 1 owner and have all receipts.

Not sure how I could modify brackets. Maybe a machine shop?

Welcome aboard!
Sounds like a nice scooter.  Post pictures when you can, and tell us more about it.
Where are you located?

 ;)

Definately look like oilhead bags - bracket is nothing like the airhead brackets. they have a slot at the front that fits a wide peg from the frame and a wide mounting bar at the top that the latches grab onto. Not at all like the loop on the airheads.

that being said - they are great bags. If you can cobble together a mount!  Start at some of the wreck-parts dealers and see what you can find. Also look at the parts fitch for the oilheads.

Good luck with the project - the R65 can be a small sport tourer.

It would be an interesting exercise to fit them to the R65.  I would almost bet that there may be some interference issues with the shocks since the Oilhead is a monoshocker.  If the bags are designed to utilize the space that would normally be occupied by the shocks then any mounting arrangement might have them sticking so far out to the side your bike would look like a two-wheeled Ross Perot!  [smiley=ROTFLMAO.gif]

Before modifying the bags it might be best to re-sell them and get easier to fit ones...

Yep. My thinking exactly. I should have researched more first. Oh well. They are in good shape and I have the mounting hardware so I should be able to resell...no more wine while e-baying! Here's a pic of my "new"R65. So far I have changed plugs, oil and filter, fuel and air filter. This weekend will be valves. With only 15K miles we should have a long relationship!

Thanks for all the help.

Looks very nice.  Other than maybe some seals or such that may weep due to old age you should have a pretty reliable machine if you keep up with the suggested maintenance schedule.

Really nice - and so CLEAN!! Get out there and ride it for goodness sakes.
Two upgrades I would suggest to any and all -
Replace the weak horn with some air horns "LOUD HORNS SAVE LIVES"
Add one of the many stop light modulators to the brake light so they can see when you stop.
YMMV - just my $0.02

Really nice looking scooter, Josh.  Put some miles on it.
Like Drew says, Make sure they see and hear you.  PO did my horn, I added the Hyper lites to my brake light.    http://hyperlites.com/

Another super horn option is the dual Fiamm "Blaster" horns as used on the bigger Airheads.  You can get a pair of new ones for around $20 on the 'net...

The Fiamms can be found in most local auto parts stores, as well.  Don't forget a relay!!!

Yeah, what Rob said aboout the relay or you'll tax the switch if you use the horn frequently.  Believe it or not the local Harbor Freight used to carry the Fiamms, I think they were $9.95/ea.  You need a low and high note if you go that route.  The dissonance between the two notes contributes greatly to the attention getting ability.  Seller "Midway" on amazon.com has them for $8.75/ea...
