How Hot Is It!!??
« on: August 18, 2010, 11:22:46 AM »
So far it's been over 100 degrees every day this month (not as hot as Phoenix but that's a "dry" hot!!), I almost hate getting on the bike, and the only way to get cool water is out of the fridge!!

Yet another list...  ;)

It's Soooo Hot!........

The birds are using potholders to pull worms out of the ground.

The trees are whistling for the dogs.

The best parking place is determined by shade instead of distance.

Hot water now comes out of both taps.

You can make sun tea instantly.

You learn that a seat belt buckle makes a pretty good branding iron.

The temperature drops below 95 F and you feel a little chilly.

You discover that it only takes 2 fingers to steer your car.

You discover that you can get sunburned through your car window.

You actually burn your hand opening the car door.

You break into a sweat the instant you step outside at 7:30 in the morning.

Your biggest motorcycle wreck fear is "What if I get knocked out & end up lying on the pavement & cook to death?"

You realize that asphalt has a liquid state.

The potatoes cook underground so all you have to do is pull one out & add butter, salt and pepper.

Farmers are feeding their chickens crushed ice to keep them from laying boiled eggs.

The cows are giving evaporated milk.

STAY COOL!

As far as the 'dry' heat, we had a thunderstorm complex come through the Phoenix area yesterday evening .

Dropped 1.1 inches (28 mm) of rain in 1 hour 15 minutes in my backyard according to the electronic rain gauge, I'll check the water level in the pool, for the official reading .

This morning the dew-point temperature at 0500 was 73 F., that was around 75% relative humidity .

When I work on aircraft out on the ramp here at work during our 'hot' season, I need to wear gloves due to the hand tools getting so hot you can't work with them !!!

No joke about the road surface temperatures, on a 113 F. day here, I checked various road surface types for their temperature .

Fresh white concrete 145 F, old brownish looking concrete 155 F, fresh asphalt 185 F, old grayish looking asphalt 165 F.

So if you have an 'incident' do it on fresh concrete, but most of the concrete around here, is 'textured', so now you get a serious abrasion factor over smooth concrete .

Just back from a week on the cowboy trail...unfortunatly my slicker got put away damp and has gone a bit moldy...authentic mold! i asked the question on the western reenactment site how to cure it.One of our members said just leave it to dry in the sun  ..well he is from Arizona and has much to learn about English weather. We did have hot spells but showers are never far away.
Thats me in the center white shirt + shotgun

Not at all definitely period correct Scottish and Irish settlers wore kilts perfect for Arizona at the moment.

How hot is it?  Man, it's been hotter than fish grease here!  It's actuallly been too hot to swim, and that's not an exageration.

Lou, I see you brought your shotgun so you really must have been expecting trouble.  But the cowboy in the kilt?  Nah, I don't think so.  I say that from experience.  I've marched in many a parade and done many performances in the summer with the pipe band here, and I can guarantee that 8 yards of 16 oz. wool is not cool by a long stretch.  True there were lots of Scots and Irish settled the great southwest but it didn't take them long to doff the clothing from the auld country.

Theres a great book called "The Long Death" which gives an account of the Plains Indians being swept north into Canada and the many skirmishes along the way one of them tells of a wagon train which was overrun and all were killed by the Indians but one settler a giant of a man who wore a skirt (kilt) was honoured with a burial robe by the Indians. When he ran out of ammo he was fighting them with his trumpet which they placed on top of the robe.Admitted they were probably rare but no one can argue they weren't out there.I dare say they were wearing lederhosen in New Braunfels TX.
Anyway heres some quality photos of our last 2 events.
