war zone

Well I rode home tonight with the sounds of mortar shells and the flash of tracers, but managed to avoid the snipers and got home safely. The smell of gunpowder filled my nostrils the whole way home.

At least that's what it felt like.
Territory day today, celebrating the anniversary of self government in the Northern Territory. Also cracker night.

Had the 4 kids at the end of the driveway as I let off my share on the road (in a flower pot full of sand) Lachlan, the youngest at 4 thought the bangs were just too scary, so I found my ear muffs from my Airforce days on FA/18 jets and gave them to him, so he enjoyed it because " there only little bangs now"
Kids looking in the air going "ooh ahh"

But the air is thick with smoke all over the place, it's incredible how much there is, and the smell is inescapable. Kids lying in bed listening to it now, as the legal hours are today only between 6pm and midnight.

Feel sorry for the Firies, a few spot fires already from irresponsible idiots, same idiots that may be the reason this year may be the last where you can buy your own.

the noise is amazing, it's fairly constant, fading into the distance and then coming back closer again. I think every Territorian must have his share this year.

John

This will be the big, noisy weekend in this country, though as I live within ~12 miles of a large racing speedway course, MANY weekends in the summer are noisy with the sound of engines as well as night time fireworks.    The dogs usually hide under the bed or under my desk - they don't like the big booms and think it is thunder (which they also don't like).    However, when they are with me in the woods hunting for birds, the sound of gunfire there doesn't bother them - I guess it is all in context.

We've had so much stupid rain this spring that at least the fire danger around here isn't real high.

I keep meaning to buy tracers for my SKS, but there is always something more important to spend my money on.

Ed, what could be more important than fireworks and ammo???  Oh, right, there is girls and booze, but other than those big four, you'll just end up wasting the rest of it.

This is too funny. [smiley=mad.gif]

I worked for awhile for an outfit that specialized in servicing, inspecting, and even flying WWII fighter aircraft. The head honcho had a saying: You can never have too much ammo, too fast an airplane, or too young a girlfriend. Obviously, this guy was not married but I enjoyed his bon vivant attitude. And the aircraft were not too shabby either.

Several years ago, there was a popular CW song lyric... Younger women, Older whiskey, More money. I can live with that! [smiley=beer.gif]

John, what other states still allow 'cracker night'?

Mate, used to love cracker night when i was younger, but i cant remember when NSW banned it. I know it was before i started high school (that would have been even more fun), i think it might have around '86, 87, 88'.
