Locusts!
« on: April 21, 2010, 02:36:17 PM »
I heard on the CBC radio program last night that large areas of Victoria and other areas of Australia are having quite the invasion of locusts now!   Seems you folks finally came out of the drought and wildfires with plenty of rain during the past 6 months and now the locust plague is at a record level!

Be careful - I imagine riding into a cloud of these things could certainly cause one to crash - or at least feel incredibly disgusting... I don't want to think about it! :D

I've run into, luckily not on one of the bikes, swarms of 'mormon crickets', while on some road trips here in the southwest US during the fall .

At least those don't fly, but I bet if millions of them were all hopping across the same stretch of roadway the net results might be similar.   Ugh!

Where I come from ( and I'm sure Danie will back me up on this) these little critters are delicious if roasted on a piece of sheet metal over a wood fire. Once cooked, remove the head, thorax and legs and just eat the abdomen. If you don't have any locusts, spread peanut butter on a potato chip( salt & Vinegar flavour) - It tastes the same!

I heard that some australians lads tried to turn this windfall of locusts into a new pizza topping - latest word  was that the demand for the locust pizza was "less than originally hoped for".

If you leave the thorax in, does that make it crunchy peanut butter?

Hey, I'd eat them before I would eat shrimp, that's for sure.

I'd eat shrimp WELL before I'd eat locusts - though maybe not if the shrimp were just pulled out of the Gulf of Mexico.. :(

Actually, I HAVE eaten some chocolate coated grasshoppers - I think they were definitely smaller than these locusts.

Great!  Just in time for the National Rally in Redmond Oregon.    :P  Hopefully they won't travel along the roads.  Maybe it's too dry there in the eastern part of Oregon.
