Icelandic is a very tricky language unless you were born to it.   My brother and his wife had an icelandic girl stay with them through the student exchange program.  They even went there to visit once and met her family.  No way they could even say their names, so they had to use nicknames.   :o

I heard one radio announcer say the volcano name right.  It didn't stick in my brain though.

The Icelanders have a strange combination of  front tongue 'r' and  a soft 'd' sounding almost but not quite like the English 'th' sound.  This combination is very difficult to pronounce for a Dane who uses back tongue 'r' and a hard 'd' and I think that English speaking people experiences the same difficulties. But the name means something like "the vulcan beneath the glacier"
