Watched in disbelief

On my way to work this morning just after 9am bright crisp start to the day waiting at the roundabout (them circle thingies you cannot find in America) a group of Harley's caught my eye across the dual carriageway 4 or 5  set off across the junction leaving 2 riders side by side waiting for their turn when white Toyota pickup rammed straight into the back of them.
This is at J39 on the M1 fortunately it was straight outside the motorway control centre so the cops and medics were straight on it  but looked like one of the guys was hurt pretty bad. It just makes you wonder whats round the next bend with people like that pickup driver on the road.

I think statistics show that rear end shunts are not that uncommon. One of the scariest moments I’ve had on a bike was sat at the end of a queue of cars at some traffic lights that were at the bottom of a steep hill.  I heard a large lorry loose control as it came down the hill behind me. With the wheels locked and the tires howling I swear it stopped just in time like on the movies.  

If I ever feel a little guilty about filtering up to the front of a queue I think back to that incident. It’s probably safer being out in front.

Just makes you wonder what these drivers are thinking (well lack of it) when they turn there key to start there cars/trucks etc. The driver was probaly chatting on his mobile or changing the radio station/changing sat nav plus untold other gizmos that are in cars these days. Like Barry's near miss that also has happened to me, car flying over a crest (but on the top of the crest there is big flashing lights to warn road users that the lights are red on the other side) & then locked it up, i did't hang around i just took off. When i first started riding i was told "when waiting at a set of lights etc always have it in gear & keep an eye on your mirrors".
