Free & Cheeeeep Stuff
« on: June 19, 2009, 07:48:29 AM »
Reading another thread this morning about the free online Vintage Moto mag plus Monte's comment about loving free stuff, got me to thinking that one of the collective threads amongst the inmates in this asylum seems to be a proclivity towards frugality.  I know that I'm always getting bashed by Mrs. Phorqs about ordering the Senior Coffee at Micky D's, usually just $.25 a cup with FREE refills.  She still kids me about the time the waitress at a cafe in Canyon Texas gave me a senior discount for breakfast without my asking for it.  (Gosh, do I look THAT old?)  Still, I gladly took it.

So with that in mind, I thought I'd just throw it out there and find out where the other folks go to get free and cheeeeep stuff that might be motorcycle related.  My pockets are empty after the recent nuptials so help me obtain the life style to which I would like to become accustomed.

Relating this to motorcycles may be a stretch, but...

...I occasionally stop by our long-time local funeral home in the mornings for a couple donuts and coffee. Back door to the kitchen is where we old farts slip in. Usually a crowd. Future clients?

Oh yeah, motorcycles. A HD rider friend passed a few years ago (not a bike accident) and his funeral was at my donut shop.

I swear, this is the truth. I couldn't make up stuff like this.

Somehow, Monte's life is more strangely colorful than most people's I meet on the street corner.   He could probably say something like, "My father once escaped from a Mexican prison with help from Eric Estrada" and I would believe it..
 ;)

With bike rallies and the like going on, anywhere nearby to these places are likely hunting grounds to score free stuff from keychains to T-shirts, to hotdogs & coffee.   Some places offer bike washes that aren't free, but the proceeds go to charity, so that is a good thing, too.  Up the road a piece from here is the WhiteHorse Press company which sells a bunch of bike-related stuff and they often have several BBQ cookouts with door prizes and big discounts on discontinued items.  When I am looking for biking apparel I always check BikeBandit.com and NewEnough.com to compare prices, etc. and often (but not always) one or the other may have free shipping on the item.

So right about that.  Of course he is off during the summer since school crossing guards only work during when school is in session, but I suspect he has breakfast at the funeral home, then lunches at Sam's or Costco so he can graze from the little old ladies serving the frozen Andalusian pork rinds or whatever the deal de'jour is, then heads to Luby's for the 4pm all you can eat buffet.  Not a bad days work.

A lot of the dealers are having demo days right now and they usually have some eats available, sometimes with free hats or bandanas.  Good ideas all!  Keep 'em coming. ;)

My father in law says that the older you get the more you plan your day around meals. I'm gettin' older. Seems the local grocery's here have an array of samples being handed out at little tables to tempt you to buy. Combine those with a request to sample whatever the Deli is slicing for other customers and you can walk out quite satisfied.
With lots of shops closing or remodeling it's not hard to come up with discarded peg board. I was looking into an expensive tool chest when a friend suggested using this board instead. Ive got some now and plan to remodel the shop walls. the usual silhouettes of hammers and saws marking the placement for tools on the board will be replaced with silhouettes of cross bows and hand grenades just to keep those peering in perplexed.

Don't forget a LAW, a Desert Eagle, and AR-15 outline.  Maybe a few ...
