Faux Pas in the March 2009 ON?
« on: March 27, 2009, 12:35:05 AM »
There's an obscure but amusing double entendre in the headline on page 103 of the March issue of BMWMOA Owners' News, regarding road directions to the July rally in Johnson City, Tennessee. The headline reads, "Getting there: New England to the Big Johnson." My guess is that the writer borrowed a truckers' nickname for Johnson City without realizing that "Johnson," when used in this manner, is an American slang euphemism rarely seen in a family publication. (I vaguely recall a similar British slang expression  employing both a first (male) and last name.) Adding the adjective "big" made the probable oversight even funnier (to me, at least).   ;)

Keep grinning,

John

I noticed that curious article title as well - and then I figured I must be  turning into a dirty old man !   Glad that I'm not the only one !
 ;)

BTW, I actually did work with a man named Richard Head in the professional audio / music industry decades ago/   He did insist on being called "Richard".

They may still be out there, but for several years -even as a NASCAR sponsor- there was a T-shirt producer known as "Big Johnson". The shirts had funny graphics -family friendly- but the copy was the ol' double entendre.

For example, the Big Johnson fishing lure byline was, "We hook 'em deep". Wife and I saw these in a Florida surf shop and laughed so hard we were crying. Lottsa others. Can't remember. Old.  [smiley=ROTFLMAO.gif]

Might as well add my story as well !!

I've got a co-worker with the name of Richard Hempe, the Richard goes without saying, but the slang term for his last name is 'weed' as in marijuana.

If by chance you are ever in downtown Phoenix, there is a sports bar/restaurant by the name of Cooperstown, owned and operated by the 'Mayor of Mayhem', Alice Cooper .

Well, there are a few other celebrity co-owners, one of them is Randy Johnson, a baseball pitcher for the Arizona Diamondbacks baseball team, well Randy's nickname is the 'Big Unit', Cooperstown had a 2 foot long hot dog on their menu, so after Randy became a co-owner, they named their 2 foot long hot dog, 'The Big Unit', so if you are ever in Phoenix, and and know of somebody who needs a 'Big Unit' be sure to send them over to Cooperstown for a visit !!!!

The big Johnson Eh? Would you eat at this popular Phoenix resturant?
"We can't stop here. This is bat country".
