Congratulations on passing Prop 8 and defeating a couple of Enviro-Wacko propositions yesterday, I toast you.   [smiley=beer.gif] I am one who usually agrees with leaving individual states to their own devices but often what y'all do in CA winds up giving political varmints in my neck-of-the-woods crazy ideas and capping 'em when they pop their head up out of their hole is considered illegal...  ;)

The Prop 8 thing I didn't really care about one way or the other, but I was quite surprised that it did seem to pass in California, which is a place that I thought would be LEAST likely to pass of any state in the union.

Umm...Prop 8?  :-?

Err,  I read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Proposition_8_(2008) - albeit when I was a little tired and still am none the wiser. Did it get up?

Defines a legal marriage as being between one man and one woman.

My stand is that the government should not have that kind of control over it's citizens.

Not if it is a society based on individual freedoms, anyway.

Maybe the hang up is the word "Marriage".
Perhaps the legal definition could be officially something like "Contractual Life Partners".  WTH, That would fit all sorts of relationships.

Everyone needs someone to love.  Life's too short... (I'm 65 in a few weeks, wife's 57,  Two married kids [late 20's] & one granddaughter)

I also think that the big hangup is the "M-word" for many folks.  In neighboring state Massachusetts, they have same gender marriages.   In Vermont (which was the very first), and now in New Hampshire,  we have civil unions whereas the legal rights are the same as they would be for heterosexual couples.   Now, I've heard and MAYBE can see some point in the "separate but equal isn't really equal" arguments that are sometimes raised with respect to this topic, but at least it seems about the best compromise that can be achieved in society at this time.   I personally don't want the government to define marriage because marriage also has religious meanings and connotations that vary by religion and culture, and I think that the term "marriage" shouldn't be used in that manner - and this may also be a part of what causes such a ruckus.

I have several friends who are gay.   Some of those people have been monogamous partners for 2 decades or so.  I personally don't see how their lifestyle or the decision they make with respect to their relationships have anything to do with my relationship with my wife, nor do I see how providing them with the same legal benefits that my wife and I have causes any issues or problems with our marriage or how it is construed.   "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness" are important terms that our founding fathers put on that first important piece of paper we keep under bullet proof glass in Washington.  If another person's way of life does not infringe upon the rights of others, then live and let live, I say.

There are many days that I think marriage should be illegal, but we're not talking about that.   >:(

I propose nothing but civil unions for anybody.  "marriage" is not the government's business.  If you want your union blessed by some shaman go for it, but don't involve the government.

Ed Miller: << There are many days that I think marriage should be illegal. >>

I don't think that it should be illegal. However, I *do* think it should be for a fixed term, renewable at the parties' mutual option.  ;D ;D

Supposedly, Prop. 8 passed for two reasons: (1) A certain religious group spent [ch8805] $16 mil. in a PR campaign supporting it; and (2) in an unrelated campaign (different denomination), the clergy ministering to a certain ethnic group mounted an intense pro-Prop. 8 campaign from their pulpits. Result: Prop. 8 passed by what was reportedly a narrow margin.

I don't have a horse in that race, so I just watch in amazement at the concerted effort of the Prop. 8 folks to make it illegal for other folks to make themselves miserable.   :-? (Bill Maher had some pointed comments last night about the Prop. 8 campaign.)

Right! I agree. Like, maybe, for just a long weekend or something? My buddy says he's married but, "Not a fanatic about it." He's presently dancing with his third next-ex-wife.   ;D [smiley=beerchug.gif]
