Justin, I have tried some US chunk style beef-jerky during our visit last year, but the taste is not the same - obviously the recipe is different. I have heard about a guy who is making "big bucks" in the US with our "culture" !

Biltong YUM I love it.

It's similar to jerky but a lot more spicy and I think a different process of getting the same thing,

Biltong differs from Jerky in two distinct ways:

    * The meat used in biltong can be much thicker; typically biltong meat is cut in strips approx 1 inch wide - but can be thicker. Jerky is normally very thin meat.

    * The vinegar and salt in biltong, together with the drying process, cures the meat as well as adding texture and flavour. Jerky is traditionally dried with salt and pepper.

You are absolutelly correct Darwin - I could'nt give a better discription of biltong myself.

If you are also a rugby supporter and you ever visit Durban to watch the Wallabys playing against the Boks, I will supply the biltong free of charge.........the only condition though - you will have to support the Boks..........

And by the way, we are planning another visit to the US during July / August next year. I will find myself in the Des Moines / Maxwell (Iowa) area, and I also hope to visit the Sturgess (South Dakota) rally. Any forum member who find him/herself in those areas, and who would like to taste some biltong - I can always try to make a plan..........

I'm mainly an Aussie Rules football fan but I have played Rugby Union in my past. (knee ops and compressed disc, forced me into giving up ALL football, now my only exercise is once a week running Hash House Harriers .

I remember in 1990 being on Clarke Airbase playing against the Americans in a game of Rugby 10's, we lacked water bottles and so used empty San Miguel bottles

The Americans afterwards commented that they couldn't believe we played so well AND consumed so much beer while playing. Little did they know.

Are you kidding me?  "Beer drinkers with a running problem"?  Man I need to join, but I think it would be bad for me.  Many trail runs, two marathons, two ultras, but I have not been with the Harriers yet.  I'm not sure if it would be giving up or giving in.  Wow.  I'm impressed.

John,  Did you say that San Miguel bottles can also be used to hold water?

In my brief (10 day) stay at Clarke Air Base in the mid sixties,  I was never made aware of that ability.  I thought they would only hold beer or air.  Thanks for sharing that useful tidbit with us.  I'll try to remember for future use.

(Clever, these Aussies.  Eh what?)

Ed #2, your obviously a tad older than me I was born in the mid sixties, when you were visiting Clarke.
Interesting place, first time I visited in 1989 NPA came to town and assassinated 3 Americans and we were all on high alert, second time I went in 1991 we left 10 days before Mt Pinatubo erupted and buried the base.

Ed #1, Hash has all levels of "athletes". from marathon runners to heart attack candidates.
Only requirement is a sense of humour. We even have a blind guy come up here running with us occasionally, his hash name is batman. He just hangs onto someones elbow while running along.
