Off work 3 or 4 weeks
« on: April 27, 2008, 01:25:29 AM »
But it's not vacation!   :(

I had surgery on my right foot on Wednesday - bunion and hammer toe caused by torn ligament.  The surgeon said that it went really well.  That's always nice to hear.  But now I'll be off work for 3 1/2 - 4 weeks with my foot up.  I've kept the Hydrocodone/acetaminophine levels up to keep the pain levels down.  Been sleeping a lot.  I think I'll be letting the drugs slide over to just acetaminophine over the next few days.  I don't like the side affects.  I do like having very little pain though.  I will like even better being able to walk with no pain.

When I first got home and got out of the car, I started out on the crutches and immediately got dizzy and nauseus and almost fell over.  My foot touched down and I tought I'd blown it.  That was pain.  I tried to go further and made it as far as a neighbor's pickup, where I laid down in the bed.  That was it.   Found another neighbor at home and the 2 of them carried me into the house.   I never felt so glad to be in my home on my bed.

I tried the crutches another few days, but I always feel like I'm about to fall over.  Much harder to use while on drugs and having a cast up to my knee than the practice runs with 2 usable feet,  The doc had suggested using something else - a knee scooter.  Much more steady and keeps all weight off the foot.  So I ordered it.  Got it this morning.  What a difference!  I've got my independence back.   [smiley=clap.gif]    Between that and getting a laptop set up bedside so I can keep up with you guys, I'm feeling much better.

Now just to let it heal.  I've got lots of projects to do while sitting, so the time will go by fast.

Excuse the typos and misspellings.  It's either the drugs or this laptop,   ;)  Oh yeah!  The rambling is probably because of that too.   ::)

Oh poor Melena!  :'(   You had no one scheduled to help you get home?  I have never done any kind of pain killers like you describe.  I cannot imagine what you must be going through.

I am glad that you have a computer bed-side (watch out for ventilation!) and you have the new knee scooter...I can't even imagine what that looks like!

Sue asked about my foot in another thread.  I had mentioned seeing a doctor about the same time you were getting examined last year.
Well, my doctor just fitted me with prescription insoles that lasted about a month.  The pain was unbearable.
So I went back to my $7 insoles from Wal-Mart (their brand) which is my favorite of any.
And I don't wear a shoe with an arch when I don't have to.

I am usually in my house slippers or at work, I have taken to wearing slipper-socks since I can...

So that is where I am right now.  Most of the time I don't even know anything is wrong.  Then I have bad parts of days where I am conscious of every step - especially on stairs.

Hey, Melena!

Maybe one good thing while you're at home with plenty of bedrest is that you'll have time to put up more posts on the forum!  I always enjoy reading your posts, especially about rides you've taken in the Northern CA area that I'm dying to see one day!

Hope you're out and about on your ride soonest!    [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Oops!  I didn't say that right.  Guess my brain is still a little fuzzy. [smiley=dizzy2.gif]   ;D

Yes, I did have someone take me and get me home.  They wouldn't even have done the surgery if there wasn't someone to drive me home.  I sure couldn't have driven myself, and I won't be able to for 3 weeks or so.   One of the reasons I ca't go to work.

My friend couldn't get me into the house by himself.  Luckily I have a very nice neighbor that helped out.

John, I'll see about posting about some rides I haven't had time to.  I've been so busy working on the bike and working on my house the last 6 months that I've been too tired to even get online most nights.

Ahhhhhh, now for a well deserved rest!   [smiley=cool.gif]

Hope you get lots of well deserved rest!  I can't imagine a knee scooter, either...  :-/  Hopefully when all is said and done you'll have Happy Feet again!
