Paying Attention
« on: May 20, 2007, 02:08:59 PM »
Life is way too busy.  And in all the busyness I had a bit of an accident at home (not on the bike).

I went home for lunch on Thursday (trying to save a bit of money) but was way too hungry by the time I got there and my blood sugar was low.  I threw my lunch in the microwave and went to open the slider doors to let in the sun and fresh air.  I turned around and must have caught my right foot on something because the next thing I knew I was down with my left knee hitting the floor and the right side of my head hitting the wooden arm of a very sturdy and hard chair.  I caught it right at the eye brow and thought for sure I'd done myself some major damage.  I didn't know which to hold first, my knee or my head.  But my head won out and I realized I was bleeding.  I was able to get up okay, found a cut over my eyebrow and eyelid, and was able to get some cold water on it and put a cold compress on it.

Man that hurt.  But I didn't get knocked out or feel dizzy or anything.  I called my friend and he came right over.  After a bit of consoling and making sure I was calmed down and didn't have a concussion or anything, he felt comfortable that I was basically okay and could get myself to the doctor.  Turns out nothing was broken, but just some major bruising going on and my knee and eye swelled up.  The cut didn't need stitches.  Just needed to sit still the rest of the day and ice the knee and eye every hour.   I did go to work on Friday, but had a bit of a headache.  So that's what I've been doing the last 3 days.

Yesterday I still was too sore and headachy to to anything, but today it is much better. I've just got one huge black eye (now I know the other use for sunglasses).  I was lucky I didn't break my knee or do some major damage to my eye.

So, the moral of this story is:

Be aware of what is around you at all times!!

Being aware when on the bike is very important, but don't forget you need to keep that awareness going even when you are just doing stuff around the house.   ::)

So now I have today to do whatever I can manage to get ready for the 49er Rally, but I can't get down on my knees yet as that puts too much pressure on my knee and it is too painful.  I'll have some help this afternoon to check out the bike and make sure she's ready.

Sorry to hear that ,Melena.

Black eye, sunglasses... just explain to everyone at the 49'er it was a barroom brawl and the other guy looks worse! ;)

We leave tomorrow heading south for Auburn, make it an easy 4 day ride/ camp as the first trip of our season.

See you there

Chris

YIKES!    You're right about being aware of what's around you.  My last 'accident' was in the kitchen with a steak knife and it wasn't pretty!  At least now my hubby runs to do all the cutting in the kitchen.  He doesn't like seeing a knife in my hand at all.   ;)

Glad to hear it wasn't serious and hope you're all better and ready to go before the rally.

Now you can just be cool!  Have a great tme!

Take martial arts.  No, not for the bar fight, I really am paying attention!  I just think it helps with awareness.  Well, and fitness, flexibility, and all that, but that's not the focus here.

Believe it or not, Ed, I had 5 years of Aikido.  But it's been many years since I did that.  I'm usually not such a clutz.   :-[   And I do use my Aikido training for awareness on the bike.  I just forgot for a minute there.     [smiley=dizzy2.gif]

I think I'm going to have to get practicing some kind of martial arts again.  I'm thinking  Tai Chi.  It's slower and more my speed these days.  Don't have to take those high falls!   [smiley=shocked2.gif]  Just have to find a good Tai Chi teacher around here.  There are too many people teaching it that shouldn't be and the one good teacher that I know of has her classes too far away.

Oh my goodness Melena :o....I've been away from this forum for a week or so and look what happens!!! I am so sorry not to have given you my sympathies sooner. That was a close one! Let's not dwell on the what might have happened....thank goodness you are OK with bruises not worse things. My bet is that you may be stretching out that knee more than usual on your way to the rally. Maybe someone else could put your tent up for you as this is one job that requires you to kneel pretty well.  Have a ball...you deserve it!!!

Likewise, Melena, I have been off in La La Land the last couple of weeks.  ::)

I can't wait to find out how the knee fared on the ride.

I hope you are mostly healed, by now.

Thanks for the sympathies everyone.  This was a real easy lesson to stay awake to what's happening all the time.  Luckily there was no major damage to anything.

My knee did fine on the ride.  I also took lots of Ibuprofen.   [smiley=1drink.gif]  The knee itself doesn't hurt.  It's the bruising in the skin and soft tissue on top of the knee that hurts, and only when I touch it or hit it against something.  I think maybe some nerves got pinched as there is a bit of numbness.  And since there is not much soft tissue between the skin and the bones, it probably just got a little mushed.  But my muscles work fine.

You should have seen me trying to crawl around in a tent though.   ::)  Gheesh!  Try 2 hands and one knee instead of on knees.  It must have looked funny.

The eye is much better and just a hint of bruising - looks more like dark blue eye shadow now.   ;D
