brake swap ?
« on: May 30, 2016, 01:04:07 PM »
Hi guys, I've got problems with the brakes (double disc on R65LS) and want to change to modern brakes. Any ideas of models that do not ask for many modifications on the bike ? Stay double or go to single disc ? Thanks for time

What's wrong with them, because the twin disk set up on the LS is pretty bullet proof if you fit braided lines and a decent set of disks. I've got a pair of EBC disks from Motorworks on mine and they make a massive difference especially in the wet.

I have not heard of any member successfully put other calipers, etc. on an R65 .

A few have tried, but I have not heard anything about a completed conversion .

I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!

Getting there!

I have amassed:-

A pair of matching disc rotors
A pair of Brembo 4-spot calipers from a K-bike
A 17mm Master cylinder kit.

Still to do.
Measure up and have machined a pair of stepped adapters to mount the calipers.
Sleeve my old 13mm master cylinder to 17mm and buy it a new reservoir
Have braided hoses made up.

Confession time.
Since I fitted a braided line to my single caliper F08 I am less enthusiastic about fitting the 4-spots to the R65. In fact, I've pretty much lost interest.

Of the gear I've accumulated, the genuine serviceable rotors would look nice on the R100 and the calipers are good spares to keep for my K-Bike project.

In fact I'd have to say that a stock system in good order, with perhaps the addition of braided lines (In my case I specified a braided line that has a black "rubber" outer cover so that it looks stock) works perfectly well and you would really have to have a serious need to go to more exotic brakes.

To which I forgot to add. I suspect that my experience mirrors that of many who have gone before - if you get the stock system working well, the percentage gain in engineering a "better" solution is more trouble than the gain to be had.

HI guys thanks for answer !

So I think i need to find a Repair kit to  restore the stock callipers... I opened them yesterday evening and saw rust and dust... and they stayed stuck a bit on the rotor... a lot of noise etc...

Anyway it goes to my second question : Where i can buy repair kit for dual disc ? Any suggestion ?

Many thanks for time

Do you have Brembos or ATEs?

This is ATE sorry to forget to mention that !

The ATEs will inevitably need new pistons as the manufacturer chose to use chrome plated steel for the pistons and aft more than 30 years the chrome plating will have broken down.

New stainless steel pistons are available at a price, or you can make your own if you have or have access to a lathe.

The seals are available and a suitably sized  "Viton" O-ring  can be substituted for the seal between the caliper halves.

Or you can buy new Brembo or Grimecia replacement calipers.

Motobins do rebuild kits for about £35 per calliper, but I'm sure there will be somewhere in Canada who sells them.

I would spend $20 on the rubber parts and reuse the pistons and see what I had. If it didn't work out you can always spend the $300 dollars later.
