Just got a satnav

After getting horrendously lost last weekend during the Welsh National I finally went and got myself a satnav. since I did not fancy shelling out £300 odd for a Tomtom or Garmin unit that was IPX7 rated (waterproof to you and me) I had a look on Amazon and scored a Rupse unit for £120 inc postage.

It was a doddle to fit, and very easy to use, so much so that they don't really give you any instructions on how to use the actual navigator. The menus are simple and very straight forwards (although I am admittedly pretty techno savvy) to the point of it being almost idiot proof.

Although a budget unit, it does everything I want, and being honest everything I would want from a Tomtom rider, which makes me beg the question why are they so much more expensive?

Any ways if anyone is in the market for a unit and does not want to spend the earth, the Rupse 4.3 inch screen satnav is good value for money.

I have a Tom Tom which is pretty good but always let common sense prevail as they can go AWOL at times, I bought an e prom on eBay for use in the USA which cost me less than hiring one and was great I would never have found some of the places I went to without it. That said the 4x4 Beast I had in the mountains had one built in....

I have had several expensive satnavs on bikes and in cars, they all met ünfortunate"ends. Our biggest Telco, Telstra, will sell you a reasonably modern Android phone for well under $AU 100, the theory being that as the phone is locked to them they will make money out of you in recharges. Google Navigation works well, and Samsungs come with Garman Navigon.

Given up buying dedicated SatNavs.

Similarly Nokia smart phones, which run Windows and have an on-board GPS, come with Here Drive turn by turn voice navigation. They need no data connection, though it is handy for additional features like traffic updates.

The huge advantage for travelers is that with the Nokia system mapping for most countries of the world is freely downloaded via WiFi. My phone currently carries full maps for Australia, most of Europe plus much of South East Asia.

I think I saw your bike parked at the top end of Windermere on Monday Tony with the sat nav fitting.

The bike looks very tidy, I saw it as I drove past.

Two of my sisters live in Kendle and I was picking up flowers for my 25th wedding anniversary which was yesterday.

My daughter spotted your bike first

Yep that was me Chris, I ran her through to Windermere on Monday popping to the bank (Barclays closed the Ambleside branch).
