It's a very simple concept, if you don't log into this site for years, you have lost interest in the site, clear and simple, at least to me it is .

Moderator of the site had no problems with this method, as I stated earlier, I went to him  before I did anything to delete members .

I support Bob in his "culling" activities...

You can keep adding posts to this thread, about your displeasure, but it won't change anything, unless the moderator of this site directs me to do so .

Perhaps the mods could add a disclaimer during the signup process about the deletion policy.  That way everybody should know what's expected to stay a member.

Nothing, while it might be an annoyance to go through your previous posts, can you not use the search feature?  Unless you are trying to dig up progress logs I don't see how it could be much of a problem for you, and as you've said, your posts are available to other members.  If you are worried about being redundant with a new post, I imagine you'd use the search feature anyways.

I understand the mods desire to keep the member list down to "Active" members.  It can help with projecting site growth and storage needs, and it's also nice to know how the site is doing in general with regards to member activity.

P.S. I think one of the greatest strengths of this forum is that it is a fairly small and tight knit group.  I think several members here would consider it a point of pride that we can have such a productive forum with under 500 active members.

For your viewing pleasure and entertainment, there are two notices in the Important Topics section just above this section .

They clearly state the conditions of which you will be deleted, they have been there for about 7 years .

Just wanted to see if anyone here had read them !!!

Obviously not !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll ask Justin, the site moderator, put the topic in capital letters and post this in all sections of this site, so no one can claim they didn't see them, ever again .

Logging in/registering/ - NEW USERS MUST READ
04/05/07 at 19:26:38   Some helpful hints...

1.  You can't send personal messages until you have made one post.  Again, this is an anti-spammer protection mechanism to keep spammers from bombarding the membership with PMs in the unlikely instance that they might actually be able to get in.  Just attempting to send a PM over and over and over will not "fix" this, the "fix" is to make a post.

2.  Once you have been registered your account will be subject to deletion if you have not made any posts AND have not logged in to the site for over 180 days.  If you have made posts to the forum AND have not logged in for 365 days or longer your account may be deleted.

3.  Items posted in the Trading Post section will be deleted after 6 months unless they are a perpetual type of thing such as a service being offered, etc.

To answer the question as to what is accomplished by "whacking" inactive users the primary reason I did it was to keep our membership tally at a more realistic level.  Unlike other forums which have huge membership numbers (and maybe only 10% of them are around anymore) you can look at our numbers and  realize that the number represents active real people that like the "little cow".

I was somewhat lax in keeping things pruned down and I appreciate Bob's efforts regarding this.  I will see if there is a way where a user can be re-linked to his old posts.

Geeze , I see now that boxerworks now requires you to be registered just to look?

I've conversed with moderators at other sites over the last 2 years or so, since I was offered a moderator here and it seems to be common no matter what type of forum there is .

Hundreds, Thousands or tens of thousands of members, but only a ' core ' of 10-15% of the members keeping the site going .

The rest just pass through .

Of the current members we have, 50% have not been online here in over a year, let alone make a posting, not exactly what you would  consider  ' active ' membership in my view .

It could also be considered as a matter of trying to maintain site security by deactivating accounts that have seen no login activity for a year or longer.  Having a number of already approved accounts in the system that are not actively used by the originators (and may be totally forgotten by them) leaves those accounts as potential inroads for hackers/spammers.

With so much stuff people store on their smart phones these days, having your smart phone stolen could provide the wrong person with a wealth of info and account logins to banks, credit unions, and social-media web accounts.

I think I have Mr. Nothing mostly back.  I don't know if I have his post count 100% correct but he should be able to find his stuff.

Moral of the story:  Log in every once-in-a-while and this won't happen.

Good point, Mike.  I do vaguely remember this "weeding out" being another tool to keep from being taken over by spammers like the previous forum...

I will send out an email to all members every three months, with the conditions for continued membership at R65.org .

But there are members that don't have an email contact in their profile, they will not recieve any of the notifications .

I refuse to waste my time and effort in attempting to contact these members, I did this two years ago, never again .

So, I'm sure there will be other members that will be unhappy if they are deleted for inactivity in this scenario .

Me either!! Just that every once in awhile some other things seem to creep in a take one's time on the computer. And I do feel somewhat guilty if I am on the computer too much.....somethin' 'bout exercise and gettin' old and creaky.
