Hi everyone, new member & new 1982 R65LS owner !

Hi there,

Great resource of info you have here. Happy to be a member.

Bought my first BMW airhead this week!

I've previously owned 70's Triumph 650,750,500, and a few early Honda CBs and I have to say that the r65ls I just acquired is a completely different and civilized animal altogether ... and also incredibly fun to ride.

I look forward to putting many miles on it and trying not to ask completely obvious questions on the boards ... but I have some homework to do. Thanks again for being here and cheers!

Smashing looking bike but please please please keep it as an LS in the best condition you can afford. I always thought the LS was the dogs doodars and yours is in the best colour! Real cool 8-)

nice looking bike, welcome along.
Has the tank got a two tone paint job or has it been cut?
Looks in the picture like it's been flat bottomed

The tank is two toned.  You can see it by looking along the seam that falls down the front.

Looks to be a repaint.  They only came in silver and red... but I gotta say the white looks really good.  Jay Leno himself said (I'm paraphrasing) "if a vehicle looks good in white, it can look good in any color."

check out Snowbum's website:  www.bmwmotorcycletech.info  Though he focuses on the bigger BMW's with the type 247 engine, the R65 is nearly the same as it's big brothers, and he does give them plenty of mention.

While very civilized and well designed, there are a few quirks and question marks to the BMW's.  One of them is the $2000 o-ring.  Learn about this before changing your oil filter.

Thanks for the greetings! Here's a photo of the bike at the top of the line at a recent vintage moto show in St.Pete.

I don't plan on cafeing the bike or any such thing. I like it. If I ever swap fairings it will certainly be in a non-destructive manner  ;)

And ... a little cheesecake photo from a street photographer ...

They had a pin-up girl contest I guess. I was distracted by a toaster tank and a gorgeous white r60 with those cool matching bubble cases. It was a great time, and they do it the same month every year in St.Pete Florida ... "the Scorpio Vintage Motorcycle Meet" it just keeps getting bigger!

Welcome Shawn! From a female perspective I've got to say that your pic is the best I've seen here.....errrr of the LS i.e. :-[  White is a great choice for the LS. Mine is henna red with the white wheels.

1983 R65LS - LRB still my favourite!? 1988 Honda NX250, "Toodles Too" and a Suzuki DR650, "Calypso." All stored in the "Brrrmmm Closet".

Hey! Nice bike!

You know, I never would have chosen to paint one of my bikes white, and in fact when I got my first white one eight or nine years ago, intended to respray it right off. But you know what? It's still white - even though kind of ratty, and it's really grown on me. As a matter of fact, I'm considering painting it like a 78 motosport RS - it is an RS.

So when I got my 83LS it looked pretty sad - scratched, scraped, abused, ripped, broken - and white - I also thought it should go back to stock or something similar. Funny thing - it's still white. And again, it's really grown on me. But I have touched up the scratches, cleaned up the scratches, fixed the ripped and broken, and managed to get it running better than I'd ever have expected.

So I'd like to commend you on keeping the bike as it is! Hopefully it'll grow on you as much as mine has on me!

Great pix, by the way.
