Shail's saves the day!
« on: July 20, 2013, 10:27:47 PM »
I’ve been tearing my hair out for the last ten weeks.  I paid $7,500 for my 1979 R65 from a Motorrad specialist in Calgary who will remain nameless.  It didn’t sound good when he started it up, but he adjusted the floats a bit and it seemed to sound marginally better.  Or maybe it was just the money burning a hole in my pocket and wishful thinking.

Anyways, when I get it home (100 miles away in the back of a pick-up), I notice that it didn’t run nearly as nicely as my old slash 5.  And then a day or two later, I noticed that the neutral switch was leaking gearbox oil.  And about the same time, I noticed that the float bowl was weeping a bit.  And the brake caliper bolts were nearly ready to fall out.

So I started the whole tuning procedure, going all the way back to torquing the cylinder heads.  Found that the 4 valve assembly bolts on the left cylinder were way under-torqued.  Oh well; they’re good now.  Adjusted the valves.  Disassembled the carbs and thoroughly cleaned everything.  Built myself a manometer.  Balanced the carbs.  Now it’s running much better.

Ordered a Boyer ignition that caused pinging in the bike, a tach malfunction, and a near nervous break-down.  But that’s another story.

All this time, the Motorrad specialist was assembling a bunch of stuff for me for low (sport) handlebars (ie, handlebars, shorter cables and brake hose).

Now it’s close to two months after purchase.  I’m filling up with gas one day and notice that the left float bowl is no longer weeping.  It’s puking.  So I get home safely and take the floats out to see if they float.  They don’t.

Now for the past few weeks, I’ve been phoning to see if all my handlebar stuff has come in.  Throttle cables still taking a while to come in from Germany.  So I take the opportunity to ask if they have floats in stock.  Nope.  They’ll take a few weeks.

At this point, I snap.  I diplomatically register my displeasure, hang up the phone and advertise the bike on Kijiji.

But it is a nice looking bike, so during the next 24 hours, I scour the internet for floats.  There is one place on e-bay that has them, but they don’t ship internationally.  But I send them a query anyway.  I check bmw2valve.com.  They have them listed, but they’re out of stock.  I phone and they say that stocking is about 2 weeks away.

But I’m OK.  By this time, I’m thinking of a brand new Royal Enfield or a Moto Guzzi…even if it means that I have to shell out another wad of cash.  I’ve had enough of the BS associated with this particular bike.

However, on one of the beemer sites, it mentions a place called Shail’s in Langley, BC.  Not really expecting anything, I call them.  EUREKA!  They have floats in stock!  They can ship them via Greyhound!  And as I type this, three days later, they’re in my bike – which miraculously is now bone dry on the bottom of the carbs.

Oh, and I took the bike off of Kijiji.

Oh, and Shail’s also had the throttle cables in stock for the sport bars, which up until now supposedly had to come from Germany.

I now have Shail’s on speed dial.

(Sorry for the rant).

Sit down somewhere comfy. Close your eyes. Take several l-o-n-g, slow deep breaths.

Now then...

Is the stated $7500 purchase price for your '79 R65 correct? My eyes done bugged out when I read that!

Have you visited the Motobins website? http://www.motobins.co.uk/
These folks have all sorts of R65 goodies at very reasonable prices. Yes, they are in England and, yes, I trade with them frequently. For lightweight bits, Royal Air Mail to Texas is often more economical than some of my USA sources. Give 'em a look after your heart rate slows...

I bought a replacement neutral switch from M'bins that is an Italian-made repop part and is far better than BMW's OEM. Less costly, too.

Sorry you've had issues with your Boyer ignition. I have one on my R100S and it's -as Lou would say- sweet as a nut. In my limited experience talking with Boyer owner's problems, the 'fix" is usually a wiring install error. Maybe not your issue but my two-pence worth.

The really nice thing about our old "cows" is that when there's a problem, it's usually a simple one.

Stay the course. Remain calm  ;D and tackle those small issues. It's worth it.

Thanks.  I'll keep motobins in mind.  The great thing about Shail's is that they got the floats to me in 3 days flat (from initial phone call to me installing them in the bike)

And yes, the $7,500 is correct.  The bike was purportedly "museum quality".  And except for the slow drip from the neutral switch, it would have been...as long as you didn't have to drive it around the block.

On the bright side, I've now become quite familiar with the innards of the carbs and the bean can and the valve train.  And for me, that's half the fun of owning such an uncomplicated beast.

Couldn't agree more. Even a low mileage mint example is going to need some work.

I got this one 6 years back with only 6000 miles for £1500. I've had to do a lot of things but all the costs have been trivial.

Still shocked about that price!
Would love to see a pic of the "museum quality" 79' R65...
How many miles on it when you got it?

Here are some photos.  Original paint on the tank and original seat covering.  It had about 20,000 km's (about 13,000 miles).  http://evanbedford.com/r65.htm

Would you believe that they also have an R75/6 for sale for $12,500?  However the engine has been totally rebuilt, it has a Corbin seat, saddlebags, and a 1/4 fairing with ammeter and clock, etc.

But seriously, it is a great looking bike.  And it hurt's em more to sit than run.  She'll be right

What I really like about the tank is the hand-painted pin-stripes.  The motorrad guy said that they were painted by women in Turkey, but I can't find any reference to that on the internet.  Can anyone confirm?

They (fuel tanks) were hand painted, but I always thought it was by little old bespectacled German men..

Alot of "museum bikes", just LOOK nice, but mechanically, they aren't safe to ride around the block.   I don't know about the establishment your bought the bike from, but, IMHO, they should have collected no more than HALF that amount for your bike.   But, have faith - anything mechanical can be put right again with time and patience..

Tank stripes were hand painted at the factory and by women.  You may find initials painted under the tank. In Germany it's quite common for factories to employ migrant labour so the women may well have been from Turkey

$600 for an 82 LS with 5,300 miles and factory tires... and then $1500+ in parts and a lot of my free time.

FYI Quixotic, apparently that strange threaded tab underneath the tank was used in the painting process.

Nice .... but the "museum" quality gunge under the instrument cluster ( 2nd photo ) would make me want to look into its history....... mine was stored outside for 10 years before I rescued it and it was not that bad best of Luck with it.

quixotic,

It is a very nice bike, but I think you bought it from one of the most expensive dealers I've heard of.

That said, it is good that it has the saddlebag mounts.  One less thing to worry about if you plan to add bags.

And the fork gaiters are a great idea, but you need to loosen the lower clamps and pull the gaiters up and examine the fork and seal to see if there is any oil leaking.
When you are done, before tightening the clamps again, pull the gaiter as far down on the fork leg as possible.  In the position they are in, they prevent the fork from obtaining maximum compression.

And you REALLY need to go back to the guy you bought it from and ask him for a complimentary shift lever rubber!  >:(

Have fun!
