winds definitely increasing.  The Bay neighborhoods just east of here by a few miles are really going to be hit bad, I suspect.  

JFK reported 32 gust to 46 kts  so far

I ran an extra two straps down on my bike inside the trailer which I blocked the wheels with railroad ties on all sides

Updated to later map show winds up from 85 at 8am to 90 at 11am.  Big deal, its only 5 more.

Up here in NH it has been raining in waves, rivers are rising, but haven't flooded yet.  There is flooding on the coast, about 40 minutes from my house - the high tide is expected to be about +10 feet above normal.   We've got alot of downed trees and gusts of wind in the 50+MPH range, steady wind in the 35-40 MPH range.
Our power went out - I'm glad of investing in a new LPG powered 12KW generator a couple years ago -  we'll be OK without grid power for at least several days - but I sure hope that it isn't any longer than that

The Sandy Storm has even effected events on the other side of the world.

Soldier Son and his battalion have had their DEROS flight pushed to the right as their US east coast refuel point isn't available.

We can certainly stand the inconvenience of a few days' power interruption and some highwater, but hopefully your son will soon be back in Texas with you folks - now that is something important!

At this moment, Zach and his battalion are at a US Air Force base adjacent Manas Internat'l Airport near Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Outta da 'stan, they are.

Say where? Kyrgyzstan is north of Afghanistan, separated by the country of Tajikistan and bordered by Red China. Charming place... Not. Many of the Troops refer to the entire region as Bumfucystan.

Flight out will be holding until Sandy exits the building.

We continue to have strong winds (25-30MPH?) and rain and expect that to continue throughout the day. We are very fortunate to be so far away from the storm. We have a few thousand without power in our county (Hancock). As the day progresses I think we will hear of some damage and flooding. I hope forum members who have been in the path are doing OK. Monte will your son fly into Bangor for refueling? The Bangor Airport should be functioning today if the winds have slowed enough. My best to everyone, D2

I believe he has had four previous stops in Bangor so I expect all same-all same. Several days at an Army post in Indiana for demob, then on to DFW and home.

Sandy is pretty much past me now, but it was "interesting" yesterday.  Around 3:00 pm yesterday the winds picked up (30-40mph) and the rain started.  By 3:30, the rain was pounding pretty hard, and large oak tree across the street from me (in a park) toppled over with a really loud "thump."  Around 4:00, I could hear power tranformers blowing, I would estimate about a half mile away.  And the real heart of the storm had not even hit us yet.  Around 6:00 pm, the winds were gusting to 50+ mph, and the rain came down in sheets at time.  My power flickered a number of times, but it never really went down.  I did lose a bunch of roof shingles from the wind, but the roof remained watertight.  

I was out this morning, and a lot of trees and power lines are down.  Turns out power was lost in almost all of the neighborhoods for at least 4 miles around me.  My wife works in a supermarket, and they lost power sometime after 4:00 yesterday.  They are closed today, and busy inventorying and throwing out the food that was lost when they power for the refidgeration.  

No significant flooding in my area (about 10 miles inland), but the rivers probably will not peak for another 12 - 24 hours.  

My office was closed yesterday, and is closed today.  I expect we will be open tomorrow.  

I expect that trick or treating will be cancelled around tomorrow due to downed power lines.  They did that last year when the October snow storm dropped a lot of lines.

Just gonna sit back and enjoy a beer or two this afternoon.

We are getting some occasional showers today, but it is actually quite calm, very slight breeze, and some sun poking through the clouds once in a while.  It is also uncommonly warm - we're up to about 71F or so today thanks to all of Sandy's hot air - normally a high temp for today would be upper 50s.

We still don't have grid power, but my propane generator is running smooth, so we are not lacking any of the usual comforts.

I was thinking about you nhmaf.  I figured you'd have everything under control.    I wasn't sure about any others in this group living in the path of Sandy.  Glad to hear you are all okay.  Is there anyone else that lives in that area that we haven't heard from?  I sure hope everyone stays safe.  

Now that the worst has passed, you guys in the mountains of Virginia, West Virginia, and even North Carolina I hear, are being dumped on by a very wet snow.  Take care out there.  I know it's not the earliest for a snow, but it's gonna be an awful lot from what I hear.

I was thinking of everyone on the coast and inland as well. We have been windy and dull and received 2.2 inches only of rain in daylight in one day. We were caught in between a cold front that came outta the NW and caused grief for n. of L. Superior and the warm Sandy front. No great winds but steady and no power failures. Haven't heard from Semper G. yet. Glad Nhmaf, Dave 2, Air4Life and Kenn are OK. At least all the leaves are pretty well down and ready for a final effort to clear them up by running over with the lawnmower and bagging any extra mulch that would smother the lawn.
That propane generator sounds interesting, Mike...I suppose it would be available to run on Natural gas as well? We have a noisy gas powered 5000 watt generator that will help us out someday but always wanted a Honda for the quiet. All generators used in the 1998 ice storm which I was in back in e. ON were auctioned off and we missed out on a Honda. Back then I had a good wood stove and was out of power for 19 days 7.5 hours. That's when I got back at playing piano!! I guess there are some good things coming out of these trying times.

At around 2 pm Tuesday we lost power, and that was before the full brunt of the storm had even begun.  I am about 3 miles from the bay.  For all the inconvenience of no heat, no range, no lights, and crazy long gasoline lines-when you can find them, including limited cash,  its still far better than what others are dealing with... some really heart wrenching stories abound.

The national guard has restricted access to the outer strip  (sandy hook, sea bright, and points south.)   Most all of you folks probably have witnessed more than I have, since I have no tv, or a helicopter.

By now you've all had your fill of the images, but to put context to my message - sea bright
