What should I ask for a 1983 R65?

I have 1983 R65 that has 78,000km on it and hasn't been run since 1999. It has been stored under a bike cover in a heated underground parking lot. When my daughter was born in 2000 and it needed a new battery there were more important uses for my money. Being a Father now I think I've lost my nerve for riding the bike. It was new in 1984 and I became the second owner in 1985. It has a Hannigan Sport fairing (added in 1986) and Krauser side bags and trunk case. It has been up and down the east coast from P.E.I. to the Gulf Coast as well as around Lake Superior, Lake Ontario, Lake Erie and the Canadian side of Lake Huron. I think I only held on to it this long as I always thought I'd come across the cash to put it back on the road. What do you think I could get for it?

You should get it in running condition.  You may get $3000 for it!

"Think" is right. I haven't been jonesing for a ride on my R65 until this spring but still don't have the cash to give it the kind of care it deserves. Before losing my last job in 2008, I was planning to scrap the Hannigan and take it back to it's stock appearance. I never did enjoy riding around in the city and there seems to be a million more cars on the road than there were in 1999. I used it primarily for 2 or 3 weeks a year on the highways and just went where the wind took me (usually to a beach). I'll have to scan an old pic and post it up.

If you are not interested in getting it running, you could maximize your income by parting it out, but I'm sure you know how much hassle that could be.

You might find a buyer for $1500 as it sits.

As it sits, if the frame is straight and all major parts present, $800-$1000.
Running, even roughly, with no major expensive noises or huge leaks, $1200 -$1400.

Don't forget that a buyer is going to have to throw some serious bucks at it to make it look and go right, so price accordingly if you want a clean, painless sale.

You might get $4-500 for the fairing by itself without hurting the price of the bike at all.

Finally got around to scanning a pic of my R65. This was taken on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Bike is for sale for $1000 firm.

Sorry to hear you may part with it, especially if you are not 100% certain you are done with riding.  

When I got married 23 years ago, I made a deal with my then wife-to-be that she would never suggest that I get rid of the bike.  In the intervening years, there were years when I did not ride much, and did not have the money to keep the bike in riding condition.  Yet I kept it (and God bless her soul she never suggested that I sell it).   Now, I am glad that I held on to it.  Looking back, I am so glad I kept it until my head and wallet were back in the place to where I could and would ride it again.

How long have you had ads out for the bike ?

Have you had any inquiries about the bike ?

With the riding season getting started in the northern regions, have you tried posting on Craigslist, you may want to include major metropolitan areas in the US, within a days ride or so of you .

I don't know if there ant title transfer issues with a bike from another country or not, differt locales may have their own unique regulations on this .
