I had a super duper [ch949][ch960][ch943][ch952]. [ch963][ch959][ch946][ch945][ch961][ch972][ch962], [ch963][ch960][ch959][ch965][ch948][ch945][ch943][ch959][ch962], [ch945][ch953][ch963][ch952][ch951][ch964][ch972][ch962] * offer come in on my bike yesterday.  He asked if I had checked the air cleaner recently, and since it had been such a long time, as in never, I thought I'd take a look.  I know, I know, Air4Life neglects the Air part of the combustion process.  

There's so much to love about these machines, and so far they've taught me that getting old doesn't have to be all bad - so far.

1) Do you folks normally check for a light amount of grease to the "Distance Rubber" # 16 11 1 236 124 part that engages with the front of the fuel tank?  

2)  Keeping those suction funnels fresh looking as they appear couldn't be due to the lack of UV's alone, or could they?

The last time I brought this up about the flat air filters air filters, on the second generation bikes I was told, I had no clue as to what I was saying .

I've got three R65's and all three need this done to the air filter before installing a new one .

Just barely visible in the photo above the part of the casting of the metal air box where the hold down clips sit, they interfere with the air cleaner sitting down on the air box all the way .

Next time you have the air filter out, trim the air filter plastic body to clear these metal parts on the air box .

Place some masking tape on the air box  and trace the line for the bottom of the air filter, remove the filter and trim the plastic a bit, then reinstall the filter trace the line of the bottom of the filter again, and it will be lower .

I recall, somewhere in the dark recesses of my cranium, a BMW Technical Bulletin about this required air filter mod. I think...

I run a UNI filter that fits without assist from an Xacto knife.

There is a service bulletin about this, but it states that all of the filters made after a certain date and that was in the early to mid '80's, were modified and no need to remove any material from the plastic body of the air filter .

I, still think it's an issue, as all I've ever purchased, were OEM air filters .

I don't think I have any new filters in stock at home, I think I replaced them last October .
