Hello from a new member and a question about parts

Hi there, I'm happy to be a new member of this very cool forum. I ride an '82 R65 with 108,000 miles on it (about 25,000 on an engine rebuild). This is a daily drive for a 50 mile roundtrip commute in the SF bay area.

I'm looking for a part (or at least the proper name and part number) that I recently lost.

Next to the dipstick/oil-filler there is a small circular hole in the engine case about the size of a dime, there is a black rubber plug that fills this hole. This plug recently fell out and I am having trouble identifying the part name or number. Any help is appreciated and if you can tell me where to get one all the better.

Where are you in the Bay Area?  (You can add that to your profile so it shows up on your posts.)  As you can see, I'm in Santa Cruz, and I have a plug for you (black or white).  It's one of the few parts that cross from the /2 series (before 1970).

When you install that plug, what I call the 'timing cover plug,' put a dab of black or white silicone on it so it sticks in place but is easy to remove when needed. You'll need to go in there when you periodically check on the valve clearances. That job is a diagnostic tool to check clearances and keep a record of what you find so ya know when things start changing too fast. It's a regular maintenance job. Easy job on our bikes if you haven't done it already.

I must admit I always worry that the timing hole plug might fall out but it's a fairly tight fit and so far has stayed in place. It's not always obvious that it's fully inserted so I put the bottom of the plug into the hole first than use a blunt screw driver to ease the top part of the inner section fully into the hole.
