Photo Gallery Comments Thread

Apparently Justin wanted to make his announcement about the improvements to the Coppermine photo gallery locked, which is fine with me, but now I have a need to have a place to ask questions and hopefully get answers.
I also stuck his thread in the stickies so it wouldn't get lost.

I'll start the discussion in the next post....

I just got a request for registration by a username "jibbonpoint".
Looks suspicious to me, but not the usual gibberish the average spammer puts in his Coppermine profile.
For instance:

Username         jibbonpoint
Joined       Feb 17, 2011
Location       Sydney, Australia
Interests       Mtorcycles
Occupation       engineering manager

Please respond here or in a PM, and tell me your forum username.  I am NOT going to authorize this user until I get a response.

Thank you.

I got Graeme's PM, and he is now registered. :)
Things are going smoothly!

I have filtered out 3 new spammers, so far! :D

Rob, I don't envy you the job.  These guys are such a PITA.  I get them over at the Vintage club's website and on the slash2 email list, too.  All they want to do is drop their links so that Google will find them and think that this valuable community is recommending their site, to boost their traffic.  They are pathetic leeches.

I have a new request, but I don't recognize the name.

Username       PeterPanon
Joined       Feb 17, 2011
Location       Nacogdoches
Interests       Mobile phones PDA
Occupation       M1A2 Tank Driver
Biography       Grandpa X2

Nacogdoches, Texas?
Since his interests only include "Mobile phones PDA", and his occupation is driving a military vehicle, I have to assume this has a 80% probability of being spam.

Nacodoches, Texas is in eastern Texas .

It's considered the oldest city or town in Texas .

M1A2 is the military designation for the Abrams tank .

Yes Bob, Google told me all of that.

I suppose a grandfather of two could still be driving tanks for the armed services...

I don't know if an e-mail is sent to a user of the photo gallery when I delete them in the approval process, so if you are a genuine forum member, and you are having trouble getting registered, let me know - I may be seeing you as a spammer.
I just killed 6 usernames that tried to register in the last 5 hours.

Well, I didn't delete them 6 different times, I have begun saving them up until there are several to do at once - maybe once  a day.  My e-mail (Gmail) shows what time the requests come in, which is where I got the 5-hour figure.

I just killed another batch of about 7 - it took less than a minute!

My skills are great for the free stuff - but when it comes to something that people will PAY me for, I'm afraid I have none that are marketable.  :'(

My mainframe career is coming to and end, soon, and I will be forced to look for work in an entirely new industry.

OK - I created a dummy logon, and then deleted it from the queue.
I did not get ANY emails before or after the delete, so if anyone wonders why they are not getting registered, they will need to contact me, as I am pretty much deleting all of the new applicants unless I recognize their name and they have reasonable information in their profile.
