Sad Story in the December BMWMOA ON

The inset column on p.10 of the 12/2010 ON, titled "All Good Things," was a piece written by a self-confessed Geezer (like a lot of us, Ich auch) who had just sold his beloved R1200RT (photo included) because of its increasingly high leg-kick requirement and ordered the recently-introduced Honda NT700V twin  :'( . From his comments, he apparently is grieving over his lost Beemer, but still has very nice things to say about the rice mill's handling.

He seems tp be a nice guy, and I'd hate to add to his angst, but I'd like to mention to him politely in a PM on the MOA Forum that an R65 in good condition likely would have both solved his problem and preserved his commitment to the brand. I've gotta spend some time thinking how to draft this thought in a positive manner.

At the same time, I'm tempted by what the insurance companies call "moral hazard," and lawyers call a "statement against interest:" If I laud the merits of the R65, I risk revealing our secret, that we have a great ride at a bargain price. (In fact, there was a recent message string praising the R65's handling qualities on the MOA's Airhead Forum, causing a member to post a plea (in jest?) for the forum czar to remove the string, lest the R65 secret be made public and cause upward pressure on R65 prices.)

Confession time: In 2007 when I was in the market for a bike meeting my physical requirements and having good handling characteristics, I would have been sorely tempted by the writer's description of the Honda. (I sat on a 750 Honda at the time and didn't like the feel of it, not to mention being very aware of the local dealer's unsavory reputation.)

I recommend the article. Substitute "R65" in the writer's description of the Honda, and the text would be equally descriptive.

I have a 1978 CB750K, I really like the bike, it's a bit tall, but I'm 6', fits me fine. It was going to be my restoration project this winter, til I found my r65.

Had it not been for dealer distaste, I likely would have felt much better about the bike. I didn't think it was particularly tall (compared with some of the BMWs I tried). Rather, there was some vague sense that the bike didn't fit my body. (I do recall that the CB750 seemed to have a longer wheelbase than my R65.)

But an R65 isn't an RT.

I own a '78 R45, a '97 R850R, an '04 R1200C and a '10 NT700.

While the first three are BMW's, there is a HUGE difference between them.  The 45 is clunky and basic, the 850 is a bit smoother and a little more refined.  the 1200 rides smoothly and shifts like silk.  Not to mention ABS, heated grips, EFI (no more leaky Bings!!) and a much more comfortable riding position.  its like going from an old VW Bug to a new Mercedes.   And the loaner 2009 R1200R I got while my C was in the shop?  wow, even better than the C.

Don't get me wrong, I like my r45, but going from an RT to that?  The R65 isn't what he was looking for.  It isn't a sport touring bike with all the goodies on it.  And while I can flat foot the NT, I'm on tip toes with the R45. And the NT has a much better COG than the R45 does.

The NT is a wonderful bike and it is a joy to ride.  I would have to agree with everything Mr Slater says about it.   And on top of that, its a perfect companion bike to the R850.

Its a shame that BMW doesn't make the R850 any more.  If they did, THAT would be the bike he'd buy.

My son just purchased an 86 700 Nighthawk shaft drive.  Wonder what Honda was thinking with that bike.  Easy to get on but top heavy compared to the '65.  Nice sound, though, and fast.
