My 1986 R65 cafe project.

Hello everyone.
This is the first forum I have ever joined, so yay me!
I bought my first BMW twin three weeks ago and I am very excited.
I have owned other bikes and my last three have been BM K's.
I loved them all but I must say my twin is just fantastic.
It is going to be a cafe project so please don't hate me.
It rides well and is super clean with only 52000 on the clock.
It is a 1986.
After taking it to Adelaide B.M.W. for a full service I had them add new fork springs.
Almost everything I will add to it has been bought over the last few months so after these pictures you will see a huge change.
I look forward to showing you all the transformation.

I have been jonesing around for a Dunstall 1/2 fairing, so there is a lil cafe racer in all of us. Even found a guy with some righteous Napolean's the other day and ordered them.   Check out Flatracer.com for stuff, good site and decent prices even when I figured in the cost of shipping from England to the States.

You should't worry about what other people will think/say about building a cafe out of perfectly good roadworthy bike, its YOUR bike not there's.

I for one cant wait to see your outcome, love a good cafe boxer. So whats your plans, full strip down, new paint etc...

And in case you didn't already know, that accessory instrument pod is worth more than the voltmeter itself.
I believe those are one of those truly rare items not available any longer.  At least not for the Type 248's (our smaller-framed, twin-shock R45/65s).

It looks like you could make a lot of money off of many of the stock parts.

I tend to agree; it is my intent to do the same but I'll make sure that it can be put back to standard without re-cutting & welding. (Unless that is, I find a bike that's a total wreck)

Anyway, for mine, I lack the time at the moment or even the space to store a unit until I'm able so I'm real keen to use the time to watch others.

Yes, I will be doing a full strip and paint(Black) along with some very cool parts,(billet triple clamp and clip ons with 3 inch risers) just to name two.
The new progressive front springs have made a huge difference.
I have a Ikon rear shock to go on as well.
The cafe seat is being made by Skinners Custom Seats.
It will be a little like this bike: )
The bike is in the shop at the moment having the seat frame designed.
The seat will be floating, with no visible frame work so it looks connected to the tank.
Aggressive riding position but still comfortable...I hope.

How's the going, I was looking on www.motorworks.co.uk (BMW motorcycle breakers) and they now have a new category for cafe racers, which might be of interest to you. Postage from half way around the world might not be great however. I am in Ireland and I use them all the time. Good luck with ur project

The way I understand it, is Motorworks doesn't ship to the USA (NA?).  Unless you find an agent in the UK you are out of luck.

No, I'm wrong.  It says on their website that they ship worldwide, but I could not find a email address to contact them.  Only a phone number, and those overseas calls can get a little pricey.
