Hi,

Obligatory greetings so that I don't get bumped from the board already.  ;D

Hoping to score a new bike this week - its a bit funky and a crap shoot since it is far away but the price is decent so I'm going to give it a whirl.

I sold my R65 years ago and have regretted it ever since.  Decided to get back into riding after a long hiatus - tried riding a Honda Shadow for a while but didn't enjoy it much. Thought maybe I had just lost my love for riding.  Then I rode a new Bonneville and realized it was the Honda/cruiser thing I hated, not riding.  :)

So now that I am back on the road whenever possible on my Triumph I have decided to track down an R65 for extra fun.  The one I am looking at isn't quite the same as the day it was born (LS without LS fairing/dash) so I think instead of restoring it we are going to head in the direction of cafe racer.

Welcome Sam, you hear from previous owners of R65's,years later they admit they never should have sold the bike .

Where abouts on planet earth do reside ?

Hi Bob,

Yeah, I loved that bike.  And the K75S that I sold along with it - but I never wanted the K bike back.

That R65 spawned a whole gang of motorcycle riders - I taught a bunch of friends to ride on that thing in school parking lots on Sunday.  I also got to teach my Dad to ride on it too - that is a good memory - I've got a photo of it somewhere. . .   :)

Anyway, I am in Florida and the bike is in TN . . .but soon to be in Florida I hope!

Hi Sam. Welcome back to the R65 fold. Where about in Fl do you live? I am just outside of Jacksonville and can point you to the best (IMHO) source of BMW tips, service and parts in the state. Mine started as an R65LS and is not quite cafe'd. It is more what I think an R65S would have looked like if they had made one.

I'd love to see some pics of your bike.  I will be looking for all sorts of advice for this project!

A couple of hours south of Vero puts you around where I grew up, Lake Worth, maybe Boynton. Here are a couple of good places nearby.

My favorite is Tom High at Rennsport. Not only does he know these things inside and out he is willing to share what he knows and actually lets you watch while he is doing things. A visit to his shop is a great learning experience.

Welcome Sam...now that makes two of us on the R65 forum here that have the Bonneville as a second ride. I have a 2009 Bonneville SE called Winston as my schizo bike...tourer for the distance and 1/4 faired for the local cruising!!! Love 'em both. Little Red Baron is the R65LS as it came from the factory with the henna red/white wheels! I can stare at those bikes for ages...I just love them. I hope the pics show up:

Thanks for the links.  I knew about Hucky and have heard of 441 but Rennsport was new to me.  I am not a wrench but I am think it is going to be time to learn.  There is also a shop here, AFI that is a one man operation by a guy named Joe.  I don't know anything about him but I think he will likely be the first one to get his hands on the bike for a check up.

Just go cool down here (Jupiter area) and I am heading out for a bundled up spin on the Bonnie . . . only high of 65 today - it's winter!
