Louisiana boy R65 owner signing on.
« on: September 26, 2010, 08:18:02 PM »
I finally stopped lurking and made the jump.  Acquired my first R65 today and am very excited about this love affair I feel it is going to remain a blood lust. My good friend Chris brought it from NOLA today and that in its self made me take he and his son out fishing in Pointe a la Hache for a while.  Lots of fish and his 4 yr old was a blast as he got so excited with every fish caught. Id take them out anytime, but I see them less than I would like. So my R65 rolls out of his truck, and Im in love from the start.  I hope this site will be tolerant with my questions as i already have a strong leak in the port carb. I have an extra needle and I hope that will be a easy fix.. Love some initial flogging about a possible fix.  LuftKopf uber alles!!

After replacing the cork gasket on the float housing, I rode it for awhile and still have a leak. On to the needle I reckon. I have one and will replace tom.  I somehow broke my gear shift lever on the second ride and cant find a online replacement for under 120!!!! WOW!  A simple piece of pot metal.... yeah i know.. welcome to the club I guess.  Ill post pics on Tuesday for those interested.

Welcome aboard!
What is the pedigree & vintage of your 'new' R65?  Has it been a regular on the road bike, or has it been sitting in someone's shed for several years?  These bits of info can help us steer you in the right directions for solving the problem (usually, anyway!).   Chances are fair that the floats in that carb are old and aren't floating well anymore, which keeps the float needle open and doesn't fully close off the gas, or possibly the needle tip is hardened/corroded or some fuel line debris came down the hose and stuck in there, keep the needle tip from seating fully to shut off the fuel.  Or, maybe it was just a really rough/bouncy ride to your place, and no one shut off the fuel tank petcock to begin with.  In any case, you DO want to get used to turning off the fuel tank petcock anytime you're done riding, as the float needles in the Bing carbs are not always reliable to do double duty as fuel petcocks themselves.   If you found that turning the fuel tank petcock off STILL allows fuel to continue to flow from the tank, you'd best look to rebuilding or replacing the fuel tank petcock as a first item to attack.

There are some places on the internet you should bookmark for decent, used airhead parts.   There is a retail-store level BMW breaker/refurbisher/garage up in Ohio http://www.re-psycle.com/

There is a fellow in Florida who does some business, though I haven't bought much from him:
http://www.bmwhucky.com/

Also, keep your eyes open on ebay, if you do the ebay thing.  There are some reputable sellers of used, decent parts, particularly a guy down Texas way who goes by the ebay handle of lamonsanfurd, or something like that.   He is a straight shooter and will often have a variety of parts.   Also, if you need something, or have something to sell or trade, use our "For sale/trade" section in this forum - someone else on the forum may be able to help, and there are some nice folks here who work at BMW dealerships, too.

Thanks for the welcome. Actually I got the bike 1982 R65 from a close friend that rode it weekly. His father in law gave it to him a few years ago and he passed it to me. He rode it to work last week with no problems. When we unloaded off his truck today and I turned the petcock and started it the flood started. He had no problem the last time he rode it. Petcock works as it stops very soon after I  shut it off.  The floats are new in that carb as of 6ish months ago. White plastic looking things and I have the cork ones in a parts box he gave me.  I replaced the gasket as mentioned and it seemed to work for a few mins and then drip, drip, drip.  It does have a new glass inline fuel filter, and it looks fine. I guess Ive gotta start somewhere.

Unibober, Welcome to the asylum. I'm pretty sure your forum handle has already been snatched by Echelon -a black-ish gubmint surveillance program- for a little look-see. ;D But what the hey...

Fuel line filter is a good thing. Fresh bowl gasket also. There is also a simple check for the carb floats as to their correct level and position within the bowl. Check into the Snowbum's site for lengthy articles and mucho minutiae of all things airhead. http://bmwmotorcycletech.info/

With the present information provided, I'll walk out on the ice and suggest the float needle and/or seat is worn out -grooves in the needle's hard rubber pointy end- or else some stray bit of debris moved in during the truck ride bouncing. It'll be something simple when you find it. BTW, how old are the fuel lines? Any vintage fuel line below the filter could be suspect for internal shedding of old, hard rubber.

Post up a photo. Some wise sage hereabouts once said, "Without a photo, the bike does not exist." Bike? What bike?...

Perhaps consider adding your BMW model and year in your 'sig line' or avatar. Helps us all.

Monte

And a PS thing: For consistent replies, suggest you delete your duplicate post. In a day or so, these will become jumbled among others and confuse us "simple is best" aficionados.

Welcome to the forum... my brothers recent flooding issue turned out to be a bent float retaining pin worth a peep.

I had a nice, long visit with unibobber (Jerome) on the phone, this evening.

Not to turn this into a technical thread, but the one time I had a bad fuel leak, it was due to deterioration of the fuel line, which is especially suspect if it has the black, cloth-braided line on it.  That is the "classic" look, but you find many on this forum that have forsaken "the look", for durability with other types of clear "plastic" line.
I happen to like the old stuff, so I just replace it every 3 years, or so.

Thanks for the great conversation Rob! Look forward to engaging this forum and adding when I can. I looked into the tank after i spoke with you and could see some debris.  Dumping that AND changing fuel line. Lots of work equals longer rides.

Yeah, you really should empty the tank and see what comes out when you remove the petcock.
The nut that holds the petcock to the tank is kinda unique.  To install the petcock, make sure the nut is "just ready to thread" on the petcock when you put it to the tank, so both sides begin threading at the same time, drawing the petcock to the tank evenly on both sides.

You should have a large screen that covers the two straws inside the tank.  That will tell you a lot of the condition of the tank.
If the original liner (dark red) is still in there, but peeling off, I hear vinegar will remove it easily.  Then you will want to reline with something like POR-15.
Depending on the model petcock you have, there may be another small screen just above the outlet.

This "junk" that can find it's way down the fuel line can also get between your float needle and seat, causing fuel over flow.
Best not to use the sidestand for longer than a couple of hours, either.  These bikes rest most comfortably on the centerstand.
Check your centerstand nuts & bolts for tightness.  Do this about once a year!

After you push the centerstand to the ground, move your foot from the tang to the foot, itself, before hoisting the bike up.  The tang will break off, eventually if you don't.  If you have a later-model centerstand, it will have a bigger "tang", and you won't have this issue.
If you do have the older centerstand, you may want to upgrade.  Word here is, they are easier on the back!
