It's about time - new dealer in NJ

Here in northern New Jersey, we have lost several BMW motorcycle dealers in the past few years.  From what I have heard, the entire state was down to just one dealer.  And that one was over an hour a way which was a pain if you needed to leave you bike there for repairs.

After this decline, I was pleased to find that a new dealership has opened up.  It is Bergen BMW, located in Rochelle Park.  It turns out that it is an extension of an existing Harley dealership.

I needed some parts for the R65, so I went there this weekend.  They were very nice and had a large selection of BMWs on the showroom floor.  They did have parts I wanted, but because they are new to BMW it took them a little while to locate the parts on the parts list, and then in their parts room.  

It sure beats going to NYC, or to Pennsylvania when a BMW mechanic is needed.

I've heard that with a part number the BMW auto dealers can get you the part but I have never tried this.

Well, when I worked at the BMW MC dealer, we could get BMW car parts if we ordered them.  So I would believe that armed with the correct part number, the car dealer should be able to get it.  

Glad to hear you have a helpful dealer closer to you, k_enn.  I'm thinking they may even be airhead friendly, but I'd wonder about their mechanics training...wouldn't want one of those Harley Hammers near my bike.

Rich, if you worked at AMOL, you may have worked on my bike or sold me parts at some time.  1982 R65, blue, with "crash bars" and luggage.  

AMOL was one of the nice, mom-n-pop type small dealers.  That's even where I bought the R65.  Too bad they lost their BMW dealership.

Well, they did have the air filter for the R65 in stock, so to some extent they may be airhead friendly.

As for the mechanics, they do have a BMW certified technician who I believe only works on the BMWs.  But even so, I am not sure how well versed he is in airheads.  Before I resolved my starter issue, I called their service department to see about bringing the bike for some repair.  I told the service manager that I had a R65 that needed some work.  I was met with about 15 seconds of silence, and then he asked what needed to be done.  When I explained about the starter problem, it was like he breathed a sigh of relief.  He said they have a BMW certified tech who should be able to handle it, but that I should check with the tech on Saturday.  Hardly confidence inspiring if you have an airhead specific issue  [smiley=bmw_smiley.gif], but then I would presume that if he needed airhead tech advice he would be able to know who consult at BMW.  

In any event, I now have a convenient and friendly source for maintenance parts, and for some possible repairs/service that may be a little bit beyond my own skills.
