Spring is here (maybe...)
« on: March 12, 2010, 02:03:06 PM »
Here in East Kent - a few miles from the White Cliffs of Dover - we've had the coldest winter for 40 years.....not like Minnesota where my youngest daughter lives but still....normally I ride all year round except when there is ice on the road but this year, no. I have two bikes, R65 and a 1968 BSA B44, and my notebook tells me that until today, the last time I rode was 8 December last year. Over three months ago - incredible. Today my thermometer hit 6 degrees C, that's about 42 F, for the first time, I was out on the BSA which started second kick. Tomorrow the R65 o happy day! Life still ok!

Its certainly been a strange winter. I went 34 days without a ride from 13th Dec to 17th Jan. Then only 6 days riding in Jan and 6 in Feb. Oddly March has been exceptionally dry so I've been able to ride every day so far and even - 8Deg C in the morning is not a problem if the if the roads are bone dry

And this morning I didn't even have to warm my gloves on the radiator before setting off for work. Spring has indeed arrived.

Not that we have anything that could be considered 'winter' weather here in Phoenix, as compared to other regions of the earth .

But it's been an abnormally wet winter here, I've recorded 6.31 inches (161 mm) of rain since Jan. 1st .

Our average rainfall for a year is 7 inches (178 mm) .

I've had to take the cage to work 9 times so far this year, average is usually 5 times in a year .

But the wildflowers are blooming, and the cacti are putting out new flowers and have 'plumped up nicely', so the 'hot' season isn't far off .

The deserts outside of Phoenix have turned green .

Just in time for St. Paddy's Day .

Forecast high temps for early next week are mid 80's F. (27-30C) .

This week was the first I've had the bike out in about 5 weeks due to an abnormal lot of snow here in Virginia.  It's great to be back on the road again, but there is still a lot of loose sand on the road spread by the highway department during the storms.  There are also lots and lots of killer potholes out there waiting to swallow up the inattentive rider.  I'd be pretty wary of going out at night when I couldn't clearly see the road directly of me.

It's been one heck of a winter!  Looks like no riding this weekend due to spring showers. [smiley=vrolijk_1.gif]  Hopefully they will wash away some of the residual sand, but with state and local governments being broke due to the economy, I'm afraid that the pothole situation will be around for a long time.

Winter here in NH has been rather warmer and drier than usual.  We have little-to-no snow left in our yard - normally @ this time there are still a couple feet, and we usually get at least a foot or more of snow in March (nothing yet).

We also usually have about a week or two of -30 to -40 degree weather (Celcius or Farenheit don't matter as they converge at that point !!) and we didn't have any of that either.   The jet stream pushed alot of our snow storms last month south toward Maryland/Virginia - I guess the politician's didn't produce enough hot air to turn it to rain..

It has warmed up to the low 40's / ~ 6C here also, though I live off a dirt road off a dirt road - it is only a mile to the tarmac, but at this moment that mile is not very navigable with anything less than knobbies.... :(

No Trolle -- Go ride!  All you need is some (really) short sheet metal screws and you too can ride in snow!!!!  If your worried about punctuing the tire then put some fire hose material between the tube and the tire.  Apparently that is how the ice racers do it...

Go for it!

Luckily I won't have to go to extremes now as spring has arrived - at last!

Come Saturday, the WH8LA2 will be on the road again and believe me, we are looking forward to that!

greetings from a wet but warm (8C ~ 46F) north
