NEW TO ME!

12/26.  500+ miles of freeway, starting at 8AM.  Cold.  Freezing fog collected on the front of my van in the first hour of the drive.  I got home at 6:30 PM.  It is now the next morning, and bike is still in the van.  The weather is as grey as the faded silver paint.  Stay tuned. . . .

     OK--A little status report.  It has not blown up.  Still on the first tank of gas though (it was FULL when I got it!  SCORE!).   I changed the engine oil, gear, drive, and rear oils almost immediately.  Nothing of note there.  They were all still slippery, and more importantly, actually there.  I will probably run it for a few more miles then change everything again, possibly with synthetic in the transmission to see if it makes it less clunky.  (My other bikes have all been Hondas and such. . .sheesh.)  The valves still had some space and have been adjusted.  All of the nuts and bolts have been dabbed with oil/WD-40 with the assumption being that I will someday want to take something off.   Next is to sync. the Bings and see if it smoothes out a bit.  I might get around to pulling the rear and checking the splines for lube one of these days.

 Everything works.  The thing runs, is a pleasure to ride, and looks really cool.  What else is there?   Oh yeah.  When I asked the mechanic at the local BMW shop if he knew of a nice one around that I could look at for reference, he said "I don't think there are any LS models in the entire area.  I don't know of anyone else around here that has one. . ."

I suppose it's all a matter of what you consider to be your "entire area", but a friend of mine has a henna red R65LS and lives around Corvalis (actually, just outside of Philomath).  

He bought that bike as cheap transportation from a party in Morro Bay for $1800.  It was very ugly, someone had cut down the original mufflers, down to the 2nd weld, because they were too quiet apparently, and tack welded on reverse cones made from roof flashing.  Ugh.  It was greasy and loud.  But he found a new set of mufflers, I fixed the clutch switch, we did a fluid change, valve set, tune up and replaced the fork oil, and he has been going on it now for about 5 years...

You won't really get rid of the clunk in the shifting, at least not like your Japanese bikes.  It's a feature.  (There are shifting techniques to reduce it.)

There's a lady that I met at the Maupin rally last summer who comes with her husband to our Airheads Barley Therapies in Salem who rides a red LS, I can't remember what year.  ...Nor her name.
