Copper Canyon

I just pick up a 81 r65 and was thinking about making a trip to copper canyon for its first trip. Anyone taken there r65 to copper canyon old Mexico.

I haven't been, but provided the bike is in good shape, there is no reason it wouldn't.  I LOVE dirt roads on my R65, and I have low bars!

My 1983 R65 was ridden on that Mexico trip by ABC and R65.org member Larry Chabira with the mob from Ride Texas Magazine. They and the bikes all made it back alive

There was a Lucha Libre action figure, a bullfight sticker and a Corona cerveza cap opener bolted to the front fork slider when I bought the bike.

After some disassembly for maintenance, I found some funny lookin' plants growing under the seat. I wonder...

I'm thinking I'd ride part of the great divide mountain bike route from Cuba,NM to Antelope Wells,NM. I think thats 500 miles in the US and 500 in Mexico to copper canyon. I'd better add another 500 I'm sure I'll get lost a couple times.  :-/

The Corona opener is mandatory as most Mexican brews don't have the convenient twist-off cap we're all used to. That and a first aid kit for gravel rash.

My experiences from travel in Mexico indicates that the less strategic planning done, the better the trip. It's a great country once you get away from the northern border.

Learn how to repair a tube, if you are running them.

On the side of the road, that is.


Have your wheel bearings seen the light of day since manufacture?  You never know if a P.O. loved the high-pressure car washes.

I'm making space in the garage to work, I can check the wheel bearings when I fix the front brakes. I'm going to mount some bags for  the trip.

Take along some JB Weld.  Maybe two packs.
