The R65 Formerly Known as Ol' Blue

Bought an R65 on Ebay that had been repainted R65 Blue with spray cans-- and badly, at that.  Since I've never before had carte blanche to pick my color-- and since I feel that the US needs at least one bike that might match those of Messrs. Launceston and Hawkins-- I opted for a discreet Ford Mustang color called "Screaming Yellow".  I'm picking it up in the morning (then having to leave town for the weekend!) but will try to post photos of this Forum's 3d Yellow R65.

My r65 is red with a white stripe, its my R100 that is a nice yellowy Orange.   Hmmm, nice.

I like bright colours.  And I like simple paintwork.  None of that Biker Build drivel, metal flake and lurid lsd patterns.

There will come a day soon when the R65 Cafe Racer will get a new coat of paint....I wonder what colour it will be next?

I fancy a sort of 60's pale green/grey or duck egg blue, with cream tank sides........make it very retro....hmm!

Almost time to get out the brush again!

Well, Steve, it's not an R65, not even a motorcycle but it is German. Spotted this cool Vdub last month outside Jimmy Buffett's joint in Cozumel. I think the two-tone paint has that retro coolness you'd like.   Monte

One thing I've noticed about yellow vehicles is that folks seem pretty divided either hating or loving the look. I'm in the love it camp. Be sure to post some pics of your unique finish.

Very nice bug. Can't see the front end, so I can't be sure whether or not it's a SuperBeetle. The rear light lenses suggest it's 1970-72 vintage. (I had to consult John Muir's running account of model changes in How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive—A Manual of Step-by-Step Procedures for the Compleat Idiot . My copy (November 1980) was the 24th Printing, Fifth Edition (not a bad run between the first printing, in 1969, and who-knows-how-many in toto).)

I do, too. My bug is the 1966 VW color called "Bahama Blue," a blue-green that changes its apparent color according to the light, and sometimes looks like an aquamarine. (VW resurrected this shade in 2005 for the "New Beetle," and called it "Aquarian Blue.")

In 1967-68, VW's blue was more a Sky Blue/Robin-Egg Blue. In North Carolina this shade is called either "Tarheel Blue" or "Infantry Blue," depending on one's affiliation.

...and today, she got  her engine guards installed (imported from a Minnesota former R65 owner).  Also, instead of a tool tray (bought a SWB tool tray on ebay which proved to be a misfit), I put a large block of foam under the seat, and carved recesses in the top to store my electronic air gauge and my padlock (for helmet lockup).  Looks so intentional that I may need to buy a lot of 3" thick foam and go into the custom accessory business..

Finally got my new (to me) but already beloved R65 to Boxers by Bruce for her complete physical.  Early diagnosis revealed that my '83 has a final drive from a 1971 slash 5 (geared much higher than stock, according to Bruce), and even the chrome grab handle on the left side is not original. In any case, these discoveries have deepened my bond with the bike-- after all, I have a fake kneecap, and will eventually get another-- and will have additional replacement parts in my back in December (though hopefully not from a /5)... I would name her Frankencycle, but wouldn't want her to be identified with the freshman senator from MN.

Must have just missed you Burt.  I was by his shop yesterday picking up a new battery.  Will he have it ready by this weekend?  He had a shop full of bikes but I didn't go to the lift in the back.  You are still coming to Lake O the Pines?  FYI, in case you don't know, Bruce only takes cash or checks.

Thanks for the heads-up on B by B's payment options... I've had to accelerate my craigslist posts to fund this process!  I had already had to back out of the weekend, because of leg/back problems (posted on the Lake o' the Pines thread a couple of days ago) so Bruce gets another week or so. He said several of the bikes in the shop were due out by Wednesday so that he could drive his van to the rally.
