i cannot remmember the password i was sent when the site was updated how do i retreive it so i can stick a piccy on my avatar

I'm not sure if I'm reading this correctly, but.... if you're logged on - and you have been..... go up to User CP and amend it from there.....you go to the Options part I think....

yeh but no but...... when you click edit it askes you to confirm your password!!! a reasonable security request

It is the same password you log in with.  You must know it because you are logged in and posting!  If you are having the browser's password manager "remember" your login info then go into your password manager, have it display passwords, and read your password.
