Yes, I hope that he is doing well, too.    Our wildlife has definitely been more frequently exploring our roadways the past year or so.  Last year, I came VERY close to hitting several (yes, several) deer.  It was raining, dark, wet, and cool, and I was on my concours doing about 50 MPH on a 50 MPH road.  Coming around a corner I saw a female deer standing at the edge of the road on my side, I slowed down but didn't hit the brakes especially hard due to the conditions, I kept my eye on her and my fingers on the brake lever, foot over the rear pedal, in anticipation of her bolting across.   She didn't budge, I started to take a breath just as I noticed movement on the opposite side of the road - 4 more deer were crossing over to her and I was almost on top of them !   I managed to slow down further, sliding the rear tire a bit on the wet road, and ended up miraculously cutting through the gaps in the group of deer while still going about 25MPH before I came to a stop, right side up.  I rode slower and didn't even blink my eyes once for the rest of the 80 mile trip back home !

This year, I've been especially on the lookout for deer, so it was quite surprising to have a bear charge across the road in front of me one evening this summer.
I think that he was more frightened than I was - I've never seen a bear accelerate so quickly after he looked up and saw my headlight dipping toward him.  It wasn't as close of a call as with the deer, but it would have definitely hurt more, I think.  Especially if ol smokey decided that he didn't like my insurance card.

Mike, that's something important for everybody to remember - when you see one deer there are more likely than not others close at hand.  I remember my mother got hit by a deer about 50 yards from our driveway.  She saw the first one and came to a complete stop as it ran in front of the car and the other one came across and ran into the left side of the car!  Dumb animal sounds like a good description!

I had the same thing happen to me one winter when I was living in a little "1 general store is all we got" town in Vermont about 10 years ago.   I was driving down our main street at 25 MPH and saw the deer on the side of the road start to run across.    I stopped my car - apparently too quickly for the deer, who ended up skidding all 4 hooves on the snowy road and smacked into the side of my car, leaving a big wet nose print where it nose smacked on my window.   It stood there shaking its head for a few seconds, and then bolted the rest of the way across the road.

How they can be so stupid near our roadways yet so wily and sneaky in the woods when I'm hunting 'em I just don't understand ! :)

Same here, they just seem to disappear come opening morning.  I do remember Ma's car needing to go to the body shop for a dent in the left front fender, though.

Don't have many deer here...but have hit three 'roo's to date - the latest one as I was coming around a bend about a year ago - not more than 2 kms from my home. Man those blighters are sure solid. I was driving my dad's car at the time (oops - sorry dad). Cost me serious money to to rebuild the left side front.

When I lived up north I was travelling down the road at some speed - saw a 'roo at the side of the road bound away - still slowed down though which is just as well because the stupid thing came back out just as I was going past. I hit it a glancing blow at the front of my pride and joy (a 1974 Toyota Celica that I got for my 20th) and it kind of rolled all the way along the side of the car. I stopped only to see it pick itself up and hop away. Meanwhile I had this continuous dent all the way down the side of the car.  >:(

Well here I sit - in my brand spanking new t-shirt. I got home tonight to find a parcel and just dropped everything to get it open - out came the shirt that fits me to a 't' (an amazing event as I seem to have Cro-magnon length arms  :-/) and the torch. Put the batteries in and boy - I concur - that sucker is sure bright! (but just to make sure - I flashed it towards my face (don't ask - but rest assured I'm not always the brightest spark). I saw little stars for the next 30 seconds!

Many thanks Justin - I'll use both with pride.  [smiley=clap.gif]

Cheers
Tim

+1 on the Sonic Screwdriver - Tom Baker rules!

Oh and Justin, you may want to consider - if there is any interest - a Buff. I love my Buff!

You can even get it made up with your organisation's logo...

As far as "doo-doo rags" go, if I'd wanted a Milwaukee farm implement, I would have bought one. [smiley=thumbdown.gif]

From montmil: << if I'd wanted a Milwaukee farm implement, I would have bought one. >>

Because of our international membership, I think it appropriate to add the following:

Monte, remember the USAF term for a B-52 bomber — "BUF"? If that's what you were driving at with the references "Buff," then it kinda fits with your comment above.  ;D ;D  For those not familiar with US Air Force slang, the words that the first two letters of the acronym "BUF" represent are "Big Ugly" Fill in the blank as you see fit.

Far as "doo rag" is concerned, I've always seen it written as "do rag," referring to the bandanna sometimes worn on the head of a male to protect his coiffure, or "do," from being mussed by a helmet (football, military, or cycle) or construction hard hat. (There's a form-fitted stretch version now being sold as a "helmet liner.")

Well, whatever, it just kinda looked like one in a couple of the pics.  Sorry if I offended any of the bufnatics in the audience...   [smiley=1drink.gif]
