retarded question about exhaust
« on: June 19, 2008, 08:29:01 AM »
So, I'm sending my spare pipes off for jet-hot coating, at considerable expense (and they didn't even kiss me!). Will I likely be needing new grommet/gasket things where the pipe goes into the head? and where's a good source (nobody say "dealer", please. They no habla airhead, although they're nice enough guys). I haven't pulled the installed pipes because I'm actually riding it. The screw-on finned clamps are going to come off just fine, fortunately; it appears that the PO did indeed slather them with anti-sieze.

Though the book recommends that these get replaced every time, I have had good luck with reusing them for the most part.
At least, they seem to work well when putting on/off the same header pipes.  After your pipes come back from their "spa treatment",
they old bits might not line up/fit as well.    Somewhere in my garage I have a spare set, but honestly don't know where at the moment.
I am pretty sure you can order these from Capital cycle, or many of the other internet/phone places that have been discussed in another
thread on this forum.   Just be sure that they know these are for the R65 headers - the R100 headers are larger diameter and take a
different part.

make sure you put them on the correct way or the pipe will start to slip out an you will have a exhaust leak. after a summer of riding i found the problem when i stripped my down for the rework. i felt like a big ol dumby on that one.

Hmmmm I thought the 65 had two little things; the realoem site shows just one collar. Can these really cost $10!? Each!?

Probably.  But how many will you have to buy in your lifetime?

And you can order parts for your airhead from any BMW dealer (even auto dealers!).  Just be prepared with parts numbers and quantities.  As you said - they don't know.
