Our friend, Airhead/Bill
« on: August 03, 2008, 05:29:47 PM »
Hi folks.

Bill isn't doing too well.  No, it was not a motorcycle crash.  It is cancer.

He just told me about it a few months ago, but since this is the closest I have gotten to having a loved one stricken with this, I was a little surprised when I got an email from him a couple of weeks ago telling me he was having to quit work, and was getting on the bike very rarely.

Then last week I got an email from his wife, Dee, saying Bill requested I be his liaison with the forums, as he would have a prepared statement for when that time came.  I, of course, said I would be happy, and privileged to be the one.  At the same time, I asked permission to let you folks know what what going on.

The last time Bill was online was the 31st of July.  Here are his most recent posts on Boxerworks where he tells his side:

http://www.boxerworks.com/phorum/read.php?f=4&i=61680&t=61675

And here is just where folks were sending their best wishes:

Tell your loved ones how you feel about them.

So sorry to hear this news.  Bill and his family will definitely have my prayers.  It is so helpful to have a loving family and friends surrounding you and I'm glad to hear Bill has this support.

Rob, thanks for letting us know and keeping us up to date.  Too much bad news lately...

For those of you that don't visit the Boxerworks.com site, Bill's wife made a posting there today about his condition.

You have to love a guy who put a BMW roundel on his artificial eye, like a strange iris.

I am so sorry to hear this.   I don't know what else to say either.  I just send my love out to him and his wife.

I am being very emotional about this.  I read this first while I was at  work today and had to just get off the forum and wait till I got home to read it again.  I wasn't ready to believe it and had tears in my eyes all day.  Now, after I've read the message from Bill's wife on the Boxerworks forum, I let the tears flow.   [smiley=cry.gif]  I can hope for a miracle, but maybe it is better just to know he is being taken care of by those who love him and know that he is in the least pain they can get for him.

Airhead has been on this forum since I came on so many years ago.  I  hadn't seen a post by him lately and was wondering what happened. I was missing his insights and thoughts.  He will be missed.

I have Bill's address.  If you want to send his family a card, PM me and I will give it to you.  I don't want to publish it on the internet for obvious reasons.

I hought you guys might like to see how Bill has been handling all of this.
These were his last two emails to me.

30 June 2008

How's things?
Life goes on for me. Just had another visit to the Oncologist today, he
wanted to make sure my decision a couple weeks ago of not having
chemotherapy still held. He understood when I said yes, as the best
possible prognosis was a 10% chance of giving me a couple more months at
best. I'd sooner spend my last days with what hair and immune system I
have left!! LOL
As ever, I'm still hopeful of a positive outcome with my natural
therapies, but I gotta face reality as well, I mean, I might get run
over with a bus tomorrow!! BTW, I didn't ask him for a prognosis, I'll
just take each day as it comes. At the moment there is no real pain,
just a dull ache around the liver, and as it's pushing on the stomach,
is causing some nausea. Unfortunately, the general unwellness is
stopping me from riding the bikes as much as I'd like, and as it's mid
winter now that cuts into it as well. Short runs are the best I can
manage, too far and I start to ache too much. In fact my legs aren't as
strong as they used to be and I dropped the Mighty Ninety the other day.
Not a bad one, I was at a stop sign, uphill, and turning left, waiting
endlessly for a break in the traffic I finally got the chance and let
out the clutch too fast, the bike jumped I lost balance and pulled the
clutch again but my leg was now too far back. I was stopped but had to
quickly let the bike go or end up underneath it, the crash bars taking
the impact but were only minimally scratched, the same for the left end
muffler. It must have looked comical!!
I still go to the shop (Munich's) most days, saty the morning, and if
still ok, stay the rest of the time. My normal job is now no more, I've
been on sick leave since this started and now they've offered me a TPD
(Total Permanent Disability) which is a payout of my superannuation as
it would be if I was 65, in effect early retirement. The money is pretty
good, so all should be ok as we could live off the investments etc and
if Dee keeps her job as well.

I'm just waiting for my favourite TV show at the moment, Top Gear, and
only 3 minutes to go!! Yeahhh!!!

Catch up with you soon mate, stay upright.

19 July 2008

Hi Rob, Happy Birthday for yesterday, hope you're able to celebrate
today properly. I've got about 2 1/2 weeks to go till I reach 53.
Had a great Tuning Day with the club yesterday, my last as I've resigned
from the position. I've also resigned from work which comes into effect
tomorrow officially. I'm applying for a superannuation payout and will
get the same pay out equivalent as if I was 65, not too bad but it will
have to go into a working investment.
Lots of changes to my life, and not the direction I envisaged!! LOL
We have a mobile Doctor/Nursing team in Oz called Silver Chain who do
house calls from weekly to as needed. I've started with them and they
are monitoring and controlling my pain levels to ensure I am
comfortable. I've been laid up the last couple weeks with fairly acute
pain, but it is now not so bad, they feel they can do better. It would
be nice to ride the bikes again....or for that matter, even drive!!

Anyway, 'nuff 'bout me. You have a great day and have a beverage of
choice on me. Keep that country of yours on the straight and narrow.

Bill..............................;-)

Latest from the home front:

Hi Rob

I've just looked at your 'link'.  I am amazed and overwhelmed by the generosity of the comments.
Thank you all so much.  Your comments have just inspired the eulogy - jumping ahead a bit here!

Bill has had a happy day. Slept most of it!  He was supposed to go to his retirement party on Tuesday
but didn't make it - So some of his work colleagues came today for a laugh.  It is Bills 53rd Birthday
tomorrow.  We had family tonight so had an early birthday tea.  The room was filled with helium balloons.
He may look up during the night and think the Angels have come to get him (message to self - leave a light on for him)
He smiles when he can and sends his fondest regards to you all.  I'm sure his mind is working overtime with responses - he
is just unable to spill them out! (now that could be a blessing HA!)

Anyway Rob - thanks again for your endeavors.  Will keep you posted.  And I hope you get your computer
fixed fast!

Regards

Dee
