I think that the'79 and maybe the '80 model year had an aural warning with the turn directional indication. Rob Valdez mentioned something about this on his bike.

Ohmigod!! You have an extremely rare and valuable inverse capacitance recapitulator for discombobulating the flux modulation associated with right hand turns and the flashers accidentally indicating left!!!!




Actually I have no clear idea, though Justin's suggestion of  buzzer might be pretty close. I looks like a very early piezo type, with then reed spring maybe making contact with, and using the mylar looking clear cover as the sounding board. The coil underneath, associated with the circuitry and possible contact make and break of the reed spring make it seem more likely. Though the only fly in the ointment is the extra two wires coming out the back.

The stock BMW turn signal "annunciator" is a round unit in a metal can, on our 1980, that does not attach to the flasher.  I still think he oughta shoot some juice to it and see what happens.  Bill may be on to something, there, and energizing this thing may provide you with a temporal portal that you can slip through and buy a brand new R90S for 4 grand!

Yes, my '79 came with a t.s. buzzer.  It was a separate unit with it's own entryway into the wire loom.


If it does turn out to be a temporal portal, though, let me know if you decide to sell it.  I have been looking for one of those for years!

I would also like to get one of these signal minders and add some running lights to the rear. Hope youll put some details up uhen your done? Does anyone know of a source for red turn indicator lenses? I've seen 'em so I know there out there somewhere.

I have seen them (and blue) on e-Bay before but have never been able to find them in the ETK.  Maybe one of our chums from across the pond could help?  I bet they are for RTs and such that were set up for police use.  If a part number could be found then they can be ordered - even if it's not in the US ETK.  I've had Chicago BMW order some Europe only stuff before, takes forever to get it but it is "gettable".

I can put up some photos and details.  Look for it soon.  FWIW, I don't give a hoot about running ambers in the back (I might if I get pulled over but I doubt I will. )

Explain just exactly what this "signal minder" does.  Is it just a beeper that comes on after a pre-set interval to remind you to check your signal?

The controller for the signals on the Yamaha Virago I had was somehow tied into the odometer.  You could sit in one spot all day and they would continue to flash, but once you started moving they would cancel after about 1/10 (I think) of a mile.  The TS switch was spring loaded so you just pushed it the appropriate direction and the signal turned on.  You could also push the switch "down" to manually cancel, if desired.  That was pretty cool...

Kisan makes the "Signal Minder".  It is a digital counter that automatically shuts off the turn signal despite the fact that you have left the switch in the "turn-left" or "turn-right" position.  The number of flashes is programable from 40 down to 10.  I have mine set at 40.  In the "off" position it turns the turn flashers into "running lights" which is why people are asking about red lenses for the rear flashers (I would also like some red lenses).

There are two additional functions:  A four-way flasher function which is turned on by selecting the right flasher three times in about 10 seconds.

There is an alternating flasher (emergency vehical) funcion that Kisan calls the test function. It alternates the right and left flashers akin to what a police or fire vehical would use.  It is selected by turning to the left flasher three times in 10 seconds.  

The model for the 1980 R65 is the SM-1.  It replaces the standard flasher (DO not throw away your old flasher).  And there are three wires that go to the right and left flasher wires and the brake light wire.  Voltage from the brake light disables the counter while you are stopped and keeps the flasher going past the cutoff number until you release the brakes.  It's cool and about $100.

Mine just failed 3 weeks before the 1 year warranty expired and after some prodding, Kisan made good on their promise to replace my SM-1.  It had a blown diode!

My bike also has Hyper lights on the back plate that flash anytime I am pressing a brake.  It's annoying but a least it gets people's (cage driver) attension.

I find it a bit disturbing that you would have to "prod" them if it was still three weeks WITHIN the warranty period.  If it was three weeks OUTSIDE of the warranty period, and they paid after some prodding, I would give them some kudos.

Prodding - I exchanged some e-mails and then when I determined that it wasn't my bike but a problem with the box, I asked for an RMA and they went silent.  I then sent an e-mail suggesting that I hoped they were going to make good on there warranty promise.  And got a response.  I had a copy of the orginal reciept which I got from Bluemoon Cycle in Atlanta as I throwout most paper but keep invoice numbers recorded in my maint. records.  It was a bunch of hoops to go through and when Kisan went silent I got grumpy (but not loud and angry).

New box is in a works just fine.
