Hi everyone, Im Ralfred from North east Wales near Chester in the UK, am presently restoring a 1979 R65 I purchased as a basket case late last year. Seems to be mostly there but in a very sorry state. Engine is stripped ready for rebuild but the casting is very poor, I have my own blasting cabinat but even after using this I was not happy with the result, I fettling the casting down and then repolished. with loads of work come up stunning, comments on the should I or should I have not done this please.

Originally the engine cases, transmission, final drive were as cast with no shine.  I'm not sure how it'll all look polished but it looks like we're gonna find out!  ;)  No matter how it looks it sure sounds like a ton of work to accomplish and even more to maintain.

Welcome to the asylum...

Polishing engine cases?

A world of pain that few bother with.

Blasting engine cases is usually done with beads or a less abrasive media to keep the matt effect of the engine.

Most use a scotchbright pad and cleaner to get the worst off, and leave it at that.

Good luck.

Wow, I am just thinking of how nice it might be to have one's own bead blasting setup.
I wouldn't have to be living with my flaking white wheels for as long as I have !

Invest in a can of aircraft stripper and re-paint 'em!

Did not know how it would look or how much work it would be, it has taken all the spare time her in doors has allowed for the last three weekends but starting to look good, will take some photo's of whats done for your comments.
I built my own blast cabinet using some scrap galve sheeting I got from work, have got the plans on my P.C. in work if anybody would like them, very easy to build. if anybody interested will email plans and a couple of photo's but I am not in work until next Tuesday so will have to wait until then.
