The mechanic was probably thinking of the two shock model from 1979 to 1985 (?).
I've been told that BMW put the R65 engine in the larger R80 Monoshock frame from 1985 (?) to 1993 (?).
My 1987 Monoshock was built in May of 1986.
You can get on the BMW parts web site realoem.com and chose "Motorcycle", enter the last seven digits of your VIN code and get all kinds of info.  You can also research part numbers for almost all the BMW parts on your bike!
I've had mine for almost a month and put 115 miles on it while doing a (sort of) annual inspection.  Just put new Bridgestone BT45 tires on it and am waiting for replacement brakes to arrive before I put it back together.   Many more "catch up" servicing & repairs than I was led to believe it needed.  Old story, right?

Thanks for the info about the website. I will have a look at it this evening - I do have to go to work now.

Another possibility is that this models could have been specially built for our police during the late 80's, but I am not sure. Our police mainly used Bmw motorcycles during that period, and perhaps they bought the bikes in big quantities.

Perhaps I am just fantasizing now..........

I have plugged in my R65's Vin  no.  at realoem.com , and I have received the following information:

Series:   R65 - R80RT

Model :  R65 / 35

Region:  Europe

Prod month : 10/1987

Obviously my R65 arrived at the end of 1987, or most probably during 1988 in South Africa - so the registration papers should be correct.

I still have to source the Internet for more information,about the following :

1. Regarding the Series "R65 - R80RT"  - what is the compasison (apart from engine size) ?
2. There are three listed models : R65
                                               : R65/20
                                               : R65/35
                                               (What are the differences)

Any information / links would be highly appreciated

You are probably corect about it being a 1988 model.  I think that a year's production starts after August the preceding year.

On the mono-shock bikes the frame and everything is pretty much the same, just engine (and maybe brakes) being different.  Of coursse the RS and RT models have the integral cockpit fairings.

I have no idea what a /20 or /35 is, this is the first I've head that!

I suspect that the /20 and /35 numbers are the engine output ratings in PS, or KW, as BMW typically lists for its engines.  The 20 KW (approx 27 BHP) I suspect is the lower powered version for the learner insurance class of bike, if I understand the German systems accordingly.  The 35KW would correlate to approx 47 BHP.

A dyno test would probably give more clearity, but I do not like dyno tests.........specially not on older type of vehicles.

35 kw, euals 35,000 watts, and 1 horsepower is 746 watts, it is 47 hp or ps (ps is german for pferde stucke, horsepower)
