Forum housekeeping...
« on: January 06, 2008, 08:59:19 PM »
I'm trying to decide whether or not to whack folks who have not logged in for over a year.  I would like to have our number of users reflect a fairly true number, but don't want to tank anybody who just doesn't check in that often.  I know I am sometimes absent for months on some of the forums I belong to...

We currently have 8 users who have not logged in for a year or longer.

I am also considering going through the Trading Post and cleaning out posts that are over 6 months old as I can't see any way they would still be valid.  I would differentiate between one-off items wanted or for sale but leave posts that offer an on-going service/parts source or an offer to buy/trade for any of a particular thing somebody might want to "hoard".

Any thoughts?

I see no reason not to start removing inactive members and old classified ads.

If by chance they want to re-register again, would it be a problem for them ?

No, deleting a user gets rid of all of their login/registration info so they can re-register with the same name, e-mail address, etc.

I know that I belong to other forums who will bump any member who hasn't signed in for 12 months, so this isn't an abnormal or unprecedented policy.
I'd suggest that you do write up the policy and put it as a sticky or something in the General Announcements section so everyone knows.

I think that it is also reasonable to remove classifieds that are over 6 months old, and again, I'd put it as a sticky in the classifieds section so that everyone knows
the policy.

That's my $.02

After reviewing the New User Registration document I had posted a while back I see that these requirements were already in place, except with a shorter time-table.  I changed the number of days and added a note about Classifieds being cleaned up and will get to work on it...

Justin,
Sounds reasonable and a good way to free up some server space. Proper maintaince of the forum is right in line with what we (hopefully) pursue on our bikes. Thanks for your work and attention to this site!

Like the others said, go ahead and clean house.

And thanks for the efforts.

Kleineboxer forum sends out an automated notice that you are about to be whacked for not logging in for a year.

Rob, I haven't seen a way to do that so I just whacked 'em!  ;D  I also cleaned some junk out of the trading post so we're good for a while.  Earlier today all of the permissions were blanked out on the forum's directory and I couldn't get in.  I was able to finally get logged into suraklyn's account and reset permissions on the directory and all seems to be OK.  Not sure what happened but it seems UNIX does that on occasion...
