Kinda cheeky.........
« on: October 18, 2007, 07:21:37 PM »
....joining your forum purely on the srounge! I couldn't find a way to email anyone so I had to join up, hope nobody objects!  :-[

Hi!  :)

To the point - I'm looking for decent R65GS photos to add to the BMW GS Series 'History' in Photos gallery pages on my website www.motorcycleInfo.co.uk

I only want a couple, four at most depending on what gets offered up :-)
I'm after at least one of an as near standard bike as possible and anything else you feel might be of interest. Images need to be at least 1024x768 pixels in size

Many thanks
Andy

Well, I haven't seen many photos of R65 GS, but one of our European friends, Baffo,
did quite a bit of work and customization on his, with photos to document the progress
in this thread on our forum:

http://suraklyn.com/yabb/YaBB.pl?num=1164012590/0

you might try contacting Baffo for further information, permission, etc.

Thanks for the quick response......in searching the forum I did come across Baffo's bike/that thread but although that's a great project I'm after photos of a more standard/original R65GS, standard paint scheme etc..

Cheers

Hopefully someone will be able to point me in the right direction

Boffo is the only one on this forum that I remember having an R65GS.  Did you find this site?

http://www.bmbikes.co.uk/photopages/photosr65gs.htm

It was the first one Google brought up for me.

I had thanks Ed.......and Sheila Lewis's R65GS photo is a great example of what I'm after. I was hoping to avoid contacting bmbikes.co.uk/ (cap in hand:-)) but I guess the worst that can happen is that the site 'owner' can send me packing with my tail between my legs  ;D

Thanks for the input everyone............lets consider this subject closed.

Cheers

I didn't even know they made an R65GS.  Did any make it over to the US?  Learn something new everyday!   :P

Don't understand that comment.  We are, after all, R65 owners, just not many GS owners...

I can only put that down to a moment of madness!!  :-/

R65GS

There was indeed an R65 G/S sold in Germany, and has never been imported into the USA (or even exported from Germany as far as I know). Some info on the R65GS:
(Markus Grave) My BMW-Boxer Book says:
"R 65 GS: Start of production in September 1987. Same technical features as the old R 80 G/S: Monolever, small tank with 19.5 liters. Engine was taken from the R 65 (Torque 43 Nm at 3.500 1/min) 198 kg dry weight. Total amount of 1.334 bikes was built until the end of 1990.

Reason for this bike was the limit of 27 hp for insurance in Germany at that time. Bikes with less than 27 hp were much cheaper at insurance costs than bigger bikes. Second, there was a limit for "newbies" who just got there bike licence: During the first two years you were not allowed to ride bikes with more than 27 hp (now: 34 hp). After that period you could qualify for a "unlimited licence"

...that said they did make it to Holland and Denmark at least as I know there were Dutch and Danish army versions. I also found talk of a 50hp version somewhere but can't find that now.

Start of Production
1987
End of Production
1992
Numbers Produced
1,727

As per the link above this place is a mine of information:
http://www.bmbikes.co.uk/
(I did email the website owner and ask if he'd pass on my email to the owners of the two R65GS's pictured........not heard back  :()

Should have send me a message after all...
They first try to sell it as 25kW versions for starters and women (!) but hardly sold, so they were then sold to various military outfits in several countries, Holland (for the couriers), Denmark (50HP for Military Police) but also France (Gendarmerie training 50HP)
I've made a comparison of the versions here:
http://www.westerbaen.tweakdsl.nl/R65GS/specs.html
The info comes from various online sources but mostly from the ETK (Erzats Teile Katalog) from BMW itself which I filtered through with VIN numbers to compare with.
In Holland there are some importers for the french bikes as they are being sold now by the french, but most of them are in a terrible shape, and expensive also.
I have about ~153MB info on the R65GS, pictures and various data, original and rebuilds to completely modified. If I filter through it, it will probably be <25mb of interest to you (mail me at r65gs @ westerbaen . tweakdsl . nl (remove spaces))
Mine is a non-restricted version, only the dutch licence says otherwise because as a non military vehicle they only know it as a <25KW (they didn't accept the danish papers stating otherwise) and is for sale now, with rear frame mod or almost original and completely overhauled

Baffo, this user hasn't logged in for about 2 months and I got the impression that he had gotten what he came after and we'll probably not hear from him again.  You could e-mail him whatever information you think he may find useful...
