Newbie from Los Angeles
« on: November 20, 2007, 01:27:01 AM »
Greetings,

I am a new BMW owner of a 1979 R65. I recently got back into motorcycles after 11 years of not riding. Last bike was a Kawasaki Kz400.

I took a basic motorcycle mechanic class from a professional mechanic. He had several Airheads and he explained to me how they were easy to maintain and extremely reliable. Although it is not running yet, I plan to get it going. I have some Nikasil cylinders and pistons with 22K miles on them. I will replace the ones on the bike now. Here is my blog:

I am very glad to have found this website. Another good friend of mine introduced me to the site. He has a 80's R65.

Thank you!

Hello, looks like you have a nice project lined out.  Since you are selling the seat and fenders I get the impression you are going to "cafe" it so switching to the later cylinders will save you a few pounds.  Hopefully you got the matching pistons and rings to go with them as the piston rings are definitely different.  Also, be aware there is some machining involved to fit the later cylinders...

Good luck,
Justin B.

Yeah, welcome to the official home of R65 bitching and moaning!   ;)

Nice blog set up, too!  I wish I had done something like that when I bought Britta back in June of '03.  I would love to have some documentation other than a folder full of receipts!

I had a 1982 Kawasaki KZ-440 Sport, similar to what your prior ride was.  Great bike, too!   [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
