Hello everyone,I have just found this site and having registered had better introduce myself.I live in Lincolnshire,England. My main hobbies apart from bikes are playing cricket and shooting,(clay pigeons I hasten to say!) and own three BMWs,an '83 R100RS, a '75 R60/6 and an '85 R65RT.It's the R65 that got me to this site as I'm trying to find a circuit diagram that has the BMW heated grips shown. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Glyn Jones.(welshman)

Hey, Glyn!  Welcome to our little forum!   [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Glad to have another Brit in the mix!  We have at least three others (Will, Thrang, and Steve) who post here on a regular basis.  We look forward to reading your posts and hearing about your '85 R65RT!  (Don't know why those bikes weren't more popular over here!)  :-?

Although I can't point you in the right direction as to your question about a wiring diagram, I'm sure other "regulars" including our other moderator, Rob, can.  He's had his '79 R65 since purchasing it NEW back in 1979!  He's probably looked at about every wiring diagram for the R65 known to modern man, too!  ;D

Anyway, I just wanted take a moment to "officially" welcome you aboard!     ;)

Thank you for the welcome John.I haven't ridden it yet as I was GIVEN it by an old gentleman in my village, unfortunately he'd left it outside for probably 12 months so it is something of a job! I'm trying to recommission it as cheaply as possible and then use it for my daily commute for a few months to evaluate it and make the decision to retire the R60/6 which is the current daily ride. It is in a good, low mileage condition engine wise and just needs cosmetic work and some minor mechanical fettling to get it to MOT standard. Glyn.

Welcome Glyn!  Glad to have you here.  Check out the tech section.  You may find information there about anything else you might need to know to fix up your new aquisition.  And there are plenty of people here who can answer your questions or point you in the right direction.

Do you have the original manual for your bike?  If the heated grips came with it originally I would think it would be in that manual.  Rob has the information about getting manuals.  I think there is a post about that too.

I'm sure someone here can point you in the right direction here.

John, you missed one of our brits - Bondo on the Isle of Man.   ;)

Welcome Glyn. Can't find a wiring diagram per se on R65, but here is a link on a K75 using BMW grips.
http://www.ibmwr.org/otech/heatgrip.html
I gather that you are looking for info on running the wires inside the handlebar? You really need to remove the bars to make it easy to drill and clean up the holes etc. That is a fair amount of work in itself. Other than that mount a switch and take the power off a switched ignition power source. There is a 6 pin connector  (under tank  - is it the plug in a horizontal holder at the end of the frame near seat? someone else should comment) shown on the wiring diagram for connecting special equipment. The green with black wires look to run through the fuse, so would look for that one.

Or just run fused power direct from battery through a relay and trigger it off any ignition controlled power.

Thank you everyone for your replies, I've now got it sorted, I think. I'm putting an alternative system on which has a graduated heat switch(thermostat?) and there were some wires left from the original system which had been partially removed by the previous owner. Fairly confident I can fix it from here. Glyn.

Glyn welcome,
No help to offer on your project. Except that this is an excellent resource for info on the R65.
Please post pic(s) of bike(s) when you get a moment.
I have been commuting on my r65 for two weeks or so.
I love it for around town.

Ah do from Cumbria Glyn. A mate of mine has heated grips on his mono R80 RT, which I'm pretty sure has the same wiring loom, if I see him this week I'll ask if he's got a diagram and drop you a message.
Bests

Welcome Glyn. Hope you get your new R65 up and running. Seeing as you already have airheads it shouldnt be to difficult. Just got my R65LS a few weeks ago. Have added progressive fork springs and Euro bars. It is Henna Red, but I call it the little orange punkin'. Dew.

Oh God is it raining! One game of cricket in a month. Living in Lincolnshire we have been lucky to avoid the worst including flooding but my heart goes out to those unfortunate people in Yorkshire and now Gloucestershire and Herefordshire. As far as domestic disasters go this has to rate as almost the worst short of losing the house to fire I suppose. Having said that I believe New Orleans is still mopping up so I guess everything is relative. Thanks for the post Tony, I spent this morning in the garage trying to trace the existing wiring that was used on the previous grips. My only concern is that it is rather small section so I may have to start again and use only the wiring provided with the new grips. I look forward to the diagram if you can provide it everything helps at this stage! Glyn.
