Happy July 4th
« on: July 04, 2007, 03:41:49 PM »
Just a wee note to wish all my American forum friends who reside in the grand U.S of A. a very happy July 4th. You can be sure that I will be tuning into every celebratory concert on the TV and especially the Boston fireworks.  I need my 1812 Overture yearly fix [smiley=nopity.gif] [smiley=clap.gif] from the Washington Concert too.

Yeah John , beer, explosives and some sort of dead animal on the grill, doesn't sound like we've come too far from cavemen at times! Could I interest anybody with clear sunny skies and 110 F. temps ? We seem to have a bumper crop this year in Phoenix. I think we could send it in an insulated box by FedEx, to the cloudy, rainy regions that could sure use a break. It's 112 F. at 2 pm. You don't even need to light the fuse in these temps, fireworks will go off in 10-15 minutes if left out in the sun today!

Thanks, Sue -

We don't hear nearly so much about Dominion Day/Canada Day on July 1 as we used to, but certainly
do see alot more RVs from Quebec and Ontario down here in the states during this first week of July.
Do you tend to have public fireworks displays in every town for July 1st, too ??

I play a couple instruments in a community band, and we get booked pretty solidly this week for
parades and concerts at towns within a 40 mile radius, too !

Yup, fireworks in every small town too...seems that explosives, beer and dead animals being grilled are universal North American icons for holiday times.  Last year we had fireworks put on by a proper pyrotechnic group accompanying a show in town with Rompin' Ronnie Hawkins. They were really something.  This year the Fire Dept. did their usual display which was pretty good but nothing to compare to the pro's show OR that show we get to see on TV from either Boston or Macy's...unbelieveable!!

Thanks for remembering, Sue.  Does Canada have a holiday that's similar?  Can't remember if y'all were ever "owned" by anybody, or not!  ;)

July 1st is Dominion Day or what is now called Canada Day and it celebrates the formation of Canada as a nation comprising a union of Ontario (Canada west), Quebec (Canada East), Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. This was declared by the British North America Act of July 1, 1867 and is known as a Confederation. After that Canada started to acquire more lands to grow to what you see today.  Sorta like your 13 States that initially were the union and then all the rest came aboard later as the nation grew and settled west.

We are members of the Commonwealth of Nations and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is our official head of state. We are an independent, self-governing democracy as you are but our form of government is a constitutional monarchy, whereas I guess you are a republic. In reality the Queen has no part to play in day to day government and only appoints our Governor General who is the Queen's representative and even that is done based on the government of the day's advice.
Our GG plays largely a symbolic role as well. So you can see why some people wonder why in the heck we hang onto the Queen at all! Old school, feels good, great pageantry, 2 major wars fought under the Union Jack or Red Ensign, a grand confederation to belong to...all contribute to the attachment to Britain.  Australia is the same as we are and from time to time we hear rumblings from down under that maybe they will make a break from a constitutional monarchy and go the republic route.  So far we hang on but i can foresee the day when the numbers of immigrants grows so large that old traditions will not be so impt. and we may move away from this form of gov't.  The English majority I think is already a thing of the past.

Hope this helps ya!

Sue that was an interesting bit of history ! If I ever learned that in school long ago, I sure don't remember it. Seems like most things Canadian are overshadowed by your southern neighbor!
