Is this a sidehack wire harness? It's gone!
« on: June 08, 2008, 07:39:00 AM »
Rob Valdez has got me thinking... My wife would say that, with me, it could be scary. Anyway.

Two different posts outta my shop: #1) Dyna Coil Installed - Crack-O-Matic Toast (06.06.08) , and #2) Tach wiring harness delete? (05.25.08) have generated some questions on both ends of our compuKers.

Rob generated a good question in post #1 when he commented about the non-stock blue-colored wiring clips in the photo of my newly installed Dyna coil. That got me back in the shop to investigate further.

What I discovered is that the "blue clips" tap into several wires that run through the dirty-looking rubber loom and terminate at a 9-pin square plug that goes... nowhere.

I also picked up a few other clues in post #2 regarding deletion of a whole bunch of front end wiring.

So here's my quandary...  Is it possible that, in another life, my R65 once had a sidecar fitted? And is this extra wiring harness and multiple wire taps part of a system that powered its lights and turn signals and, whatever? If that turns out to be the case, I have some more "unwiring" to do. BMW veterans... what's your take on this?

This image shows the multiple blue-colored wire taps and the open end of the rubber tube wiring loom. Couple other red wires running off to... nowhere. Couple other odd wires simply clipped off.

This shot reveals the other end of the rubber loom tube. Note the square plastic terminal. It has nine male pins within the connector. Also no longer attached to anything. Note the two odd red wires. One goes to a frame ground near the relays and the other taps into a wire at the fuse box. Jeez.

I'm beginning to form a possible moniker for this bike... Das FrankenBeemer. I dunno. Need coffee.

Modified post- Sunday 08 Jun 08 1045 hrs local:
No reason not to delete this entire snake's nest, so...

None of these wires went anywhere and they weren't paying for the ride so, adios, sucker.
Lots of wire taps... I hate what these silly things do to the wiring. Now I've got to check each of the original wires to confirm that there are no breaks in any of the copper "threads".

Gotta get busy as two grandchildren arrive this afternoon for a few days visit. Later...

not sure what they would be without tracing them out with a wiring harness. but get rid of those scotchloc wire taps. those things will do nothing but cause problem in the future for sure.

Nothing in any BMW shop manual that I own regarding this wire harness. I tracked every wire and they all ended at an empty plastic connector plug, one at a frame ground, and one at the fuse box.

See the modified post with another photo. I also cleaned each of the wires that had been "injured" by the cheesy wire taps, tested them for continuity and then secured them.

Everything works so I'm glad to get rid of this unnecessary mess.

Maybe for a large Vetter-type fairing?

Had not thought of a big fairing but that's a better guess than my sidecar idea. Didn't find any marks and/or fitting points on the chassis for a s'hack. I think you're probably on the mark, Rob.

At any rate, the harness is off and the entire frame backbone looks much nicer.

The coil was just installed... guess the date gave that away, huh? My OE BMW coil had some nasty hairline cracks on the forward end and was causing a little bit of an ignition miss. That and the old HT leads and caps. Though twenty-seven years is a pretty good service life.

The coil is a Dyna unit from Rick Jones and http://www.motoelekt.com/index.html. For $90.00, and that's about 25-30 bucks less than a BMW replacement, Rick supplies the coil, a new mounting bracket, all the required install hardware and a nice illustrated installation sheet. It is a plug n'play if there ever was one.

The new Dyna coil and plug wires, caps and NGKs from http://www.mikesxs.net/ got my R65 running sweetly.
