Hello everyone.

I have been keeping an eye on the forum in its various reincarnations over the last couple of years and have now finally got round to joining up. My r65 is an 80-81 model with the flat top carbs and points ignition. Like many other members I had been a fan of this particular bike for many years after riding one just the once in the mid 80s. However kids, mortgages etc got in the way for a good few years, till I finally had a few spare quid to purchase the bike of my dreams 2 yrs ago. However Old copper tank has been off the road for the last twelve months as I am busy studying for a nursing qualification over here in damp and murky Gt Britain. It will probably be mid summer before I get the time to put her back on the road as she needs new tyres, andbattery. Also the last time I rode old copper tank she would struggle to pull cleanly past 4500 rpm, plus the nuetral switch would on occassion act the goat as well. These are problems I'm sure you guys are well aware of, so I will be picking your brains in the spring. When I can sort my camera out I will send you some pictures. Thanks for now. Stevie

Hi, as I remember the bike would rev freely whilst sat motionless, but going through the gears it was struggling a lot and would not pull when in top gear either

The reason I asked was because i was vexed with a similar problem but only at extended cursing above 4.5k rpm. Mine turned out to be mis adjusted fuel floats.

Another common malady is the rubber vacuum diaphragms can/do wear out and get holes/rips.  This usually manifests itself by pulling good up to a certain RPM then it "don't wanna go no mo"!  I suppose the RPM where this would cut in at could depend on the size of the hole/tear.  You can remove the carb tops and inspect the diphragms fairly easy but may need to use a hand impact to get the screws out - unless it has been upgraded with stainless allen head screws...

And to do it right, you have to remove the control cables from the carb.
