New here hoping for some help

Just bought a 79 r65, hasn’t run in a decade, it’s all there, but needs a lot of tlc, hoping I could find a service manual online, anybody know how I could download one?

Please do not simply change the oil, pour fuel into it, connect a battery and see what happens.

What you need to do is "recommission" the machine which means systematically checking/cleaning all of the major components prior to the first attempted start.

There is a copy of the factory repair manual available online, my recommendation is that you ignore it as the problem with the factory text is that it presupposes that you have attended BMW specific training and have all of the Matra special tools in your cabinet.

You are far, far better off buying a Clymer or Haynes manual - these regularly appear on eBay for little money.

Your other major resource that you are going to need is Snowbums occasionally soporific web pages

Hi there & welcome to the tribe - I agree with all that Tony has said. Ask any questions you want on here - nothing is too small & nothing will be considered stupid - you'll get all the help you need.

I have both the Clumber & Haynes manuals as I find that sometimes one has more detail & better photos than the other.
.
These are relatively simple bikes to work on - so with guidance you will be fine recommisdioning it.

Welcome, if you go to page 3 in the R65 technical FAQ there is a user manual in PDF which I uploaded a while back It may be of help but try to get a Haynes manual they are very handy.

I am in the same boat. I recently got a '79 that has been sitting in a garage in Seattle for the last 12 years.

I got a new Clymer manual online. It was about $40, but well worth it.

Looks like there are at least 3 of us now in that boat. I will get my 79 R65 from the shop as soon as they give it some basic service after being in storage for about 4 years. Yes, I could have done all that myself, but I'm anxious to ride and didn't want to burn the time on it.

Pretty simple really.
Pull the plugs and squirt some oil/ (favorite fluid) in the cylinders.
Check for oil in the crankcase.
Turn the engine over by hand with the plugs out to check for condition. Noises, compression etc.
Things change based on the results of your inspection.
Grungy oil? Pull the pan.
Rust in the float bowls? Tank will need some work.
Crack open your favorite beverage.
