Valeo knock-off starter
« on: May 05, 2017, 09:53:02 PM »
I ran across a new Valeo starter on Amazon for $57 with free shipping. Seemed like a deal so I ordered it to have on the shelf. The only other starter I saw in a quick research was more than double that.

Pardon my confusion, but the one you got was a knockoff,  right?  A knockoff of a Valeo?

I followed the link  and it goes to one for $61. But, strangely, I saw another one on that page for $57. And it also sounds like a knockoff but in the notes says "Valeo".

As far as teeth, are all of our R65's the same (is it 9 teeth)?

Yes it's a 9 tooth...... and they only say Valeo to let you know what style they copied, you can get a Bosch copy too.  I found that they were cheap all along. I'd been saving the old Bosch for a spare but would rather have the gear reduction style, and at $60 delivered I couldn't help but  put one on my shelf.

And is there a simple explanation as to the difference between the Bosch and Valeo? I knew about both, and that the Valeo was lighter or something?).  But i didn't realize there were big differences between the two.  I just thought it was a matter of a supplier change way back when.

The Valeo has a gear reduction drive and cranks the engine faster with less amps and they weigh less than the Bosch starter.

Early Valeo starters had problems with the magnets coming lose. They have since cured that issue. Hoping my Chinese knock off has the problem cured too  ::)

Ah, ok. I knew about the reduced weight but not the gear reduction part. Now some of the other stuff I read makes more sense as far as some people preferring that version.   Thanks.

And don't worry, I'm completely confident that they employed only the most modern methods of magnet adhering technology when they copied these.    ;D
