I saw this bike in Australia...
« on: January 15, 2015, 10:11:57 PM »
I was in Australia last month until early this year. I spent most of my time going to motorcycle wreckers and specialty shops, looking for parts for the R65. When I mentioned to one of the shops that I was in the process of rebuilding an Airhead, he showed me this gem in their workshop.

Sweet.  Looks like it is built for the track.

Did you have much success in finding R65 parts?  My impression is that what is available is now overpriced.

Having recently completed a major rebuild of an R65 I have to say that I bought very, very few items I needed in Australia, the few I did buy locally cost me far more than had I waited and purchased elsewhere.

I am currently rebuilding a Kawasaki KLE500 and have found that on average I can buy engine parts (cylinders, pistons and complete cylinder head so far) inclusive of freight to FNQ for somewhat less than 2/3 of the price the same parts seem to command in Australia - not including postage/freight.

To give you some R65 examples - Front wheel from Germany - $88 to buy and $84 postage (DHL) took nine days from Germany to my office. Complete tail light - $35 and $25 post ex Poland. Pistons and Barrels around $200 inclusive of freight. Cylinder heads I bought in the UK and got a bit raped on the freight costs, but as it happens the heads had been professionally ported, flowed and polished (which you would never have known from the crap on and in them when they arrived) so i am VERY happy with them.

Parts wise I buy from Motobins and Motorworks - the price from either including cost to Australia is less in many cases than the purchase price alone in Australia - the thieves at Munich Motors in particular charge more for post/ freight than either motobins or motorworks in addition to their inflated prices.

End of the day I simply would not bother trying to buy 2nd hand components or parts in Australia. And the really wonderful thing is that courtesy of the internet - you do not have to.

I think it was said on this forum that, the biggest customer in Oz for Motorworks is Munichs.  So that goes a long way to explaining their prices.   >:(

I have not bought off them and like you say Tony, I see no reason to.  I've no problem buying locally but if they don't want to be competitive, then my dollars go elsewhere.
