Really clean '79 on eBay
« on: March 15, 2014, 03:08:21 PM »
Came across this whilst browsing:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-R-Series-BMW-R65-/321351745672?forcerrptr=true&hash=item4ad20e8088&item=321351745672&pt=US_motorcycles

Not mine, no affiliation, etc, etc. just impressed by how clean and complete it is.

So does a centerstand start collapsing on itself even without excessive use? Seems like despite the age, with less than 10k miles the bike couldn't have been put on and off the stand that many times...  :-?

very clean indeed. No corrosion on engine cases which means probably kept like a baby and hasn't seen any rain. The tyres look brand new as well.

Only fault my eyes spotted are on the right hand side frame covering the cylinder - a bit of scraping which means it has been on its side at some speed. There should be scraping marks on the muffler too if that happened while driving. So whatever the case, just something to be aware of.

Let's see.. 2014 - 1979 = 35 years old.  A common trope, which you may not be aware of if you're new to beemers, is that bmw riders are pricks.

This is because they are always showing off their convenient center stands, by parking their BMWs on them all the time. Such jerks!  ::)

I imagine this bike has been on its centerstand for most of those 35 years.. even with out causing wear, I bet something has bent.  Failing that, I blame the PO for a misinstall / "adjustment", or excessive centerstand usage.  10,000 miles up and down the strip stopping for pints...

'04 R1150 RT ~41000 miles
'86 R65 / '84 motor ~72000 miles. SS lines, Spiegler rotor, Progressive monoshock, Keihan silencers, a piece of Pichler fairing.
'76 CB400F ~26000 miles. non-runner!

The centre stand resting position is a compromise between ease of use and security once on the stand. BMW being conservative in all aspects may have leaned too far towards security.  Add on top of that manufacturing tolerances and it wouldn't surprise me if many bikes went too far over centre on the stand when they were brand new.

That one on ebay is bad though and worse than mine was at 6000 miles. Once they do go too far over centre or if they start like that I think they would wear rapidly due to the extra stress put on the stand tips and stops.
